According to a government representative, Ukraine is planning to increase its army by around 160,000 more soldiers. This number of men should be used in addition to military service, the secretary of the National Security Council, Oleksandr Lytvynenko, announced in parliament in Kiev on Tuesday. Security sources also said that this mobilization should take place within three months.

Meanwhile, a senior Ukrainian military official confirmed reports of massive problems on the front in the western part of the Donetsk region. “We all know that I am not revealing any military secret when I say that our front has collapsed,” said Major General Dmytro Marchenko in a video interview with ex-parliamentary representative Boryslav Beresa published on Monday evening.

The Russian troops had already entered the city of Selydove and, according to his forecast, would soon have conquered it. On Tuesday afternoon, the Russian Defense Ministry declared the city had been taken.

Marchenko gave several reasons for the Russian advance. “Firstly, there is a lack of ammunition and weapons, secondly, there is a lack of people, there are no people, no replacements, the soldiers are tired, they cannot cover the front line where they are,” complained the major general. In addition, the command leadership is not optimal. At the beginning of the war, Marchenko became known for the successful defense of the southern Ukrainian regions of Mykolaiv and Kherson.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion since February 2022. Russian troops have been advancing in eastern Ukraine for just over a year. Most recently, they captured several smaller towns such as Krasnohorivka, Ukrainsk, Vuhledar and Hirnyk in the Donetsk mining region.
