New banknote in Poland. Official NBP comment

In 2021, the first information appeared about the possible introduction of a thousand zloty banknote into circulation.

I think that the next president, and I hope in the next term, but every president who comes will introduce the PLN 1,000 banknote at some point – said Adam Glapiński, president of the NBP.

The National Bank of Poland denies the reports

We asked the National Bank of Poland to confirm plans to introduce a new banknote and to answer the question whether the mentioned date is valid.

We would like to inform you that the NBP has not and is not currently working on a new circulation banknote and there are no such plans – we read in an e-mail sent to the money.pl editorial office.

I know it from the times of the Polish People’s Republic!! I mean, after a PLN 1,000 banknote, it will probably be PLN 2,000, PLN 5,000, PLN 10,000, PLN 50,000 and PLN 100,000, and probably won’t reach a million!!

The higher the denomination, the greater the poverty for society

190 billion deficit this year and 290 billion next year. This borrowed money will go to the market – it will only be inflation and a cosmic debt to be repaid with interest

Does Glapiński really not know or is he so unreasonable that the State Tribunal for him is suspended only until the presidential elections? He probably doesn’t think that his sins have been forgiven and he will continue to rule the NBP? Tusk is waiting for the president and the strengthening of his power. Then everything will be easier than before.

Was and is the euro zone better than the Polish zloty zone?

What happened during communism, under Gierek and later begins. Inflation is in the hands of the government, it is driving it (inflation). Soon they will exchange money in the style of Bierut and company.

The denominations are getting higher and higher, but no one is withdrawing the lowest ones which are no longer needed. They should eliminate pennies, because who needs them? Regards.

I will share the commission for setting up Revolut. PLN 130.

If PiS continued to rule, all the Beata Mateuszes from the plots, the Olszewski priests, the denomination of PLN 2,000 would not be enough.

The Great Zloty Debate: A Modern Currency Mystery

Ah, the infamous PLN 1,000 banknote – the stuff of dreams, or perhaps nightmares, depending on your wallet situation. In 2021, we were teased with the idea that Poland might soon roll out a shiny new 1,000-zloty bill. Can you imagine? Buying an item with just a single note? I’d never have to change my purse again!

“I think that the next president, and I hope in the next term, but every president who comes will introduce the PLN 1,000 banknote at some point” – Adam Glapiński, president of the NBP.

Hold on to your banknotes, folks! The statement made by Glapiński suggested a future where cash could get very cushy and comfortable. Or maybe just heavier. Who needs a dumbbell when you’ve got a wallet full of 1,000 zloty notes? Might as well start a new fitness regime called “weight lifting with currency”.

The National Bank of Poland Denies the Rumors

However, wait! The National Bank of Poland was less than enthusiastic about this potential minty fresh addition to our wallets. They flatly denied that any new banknote was in the works. Now, isn’t that a fun game of “he said, she said”? It’s like a classic episode of a sitcom where the characters keep misunderstanding each other — if only they could just check their emails instead of making grand pronouncements!

“We would like to inform you that the NBP has not and is not currently working on a new circulation banknote and there are no such plans” – National Bank of Poland.

Well, there you have it. The only thing getting higher than inflation are our hopes for a big, green banknote. Yet let’s face it, being told ‘no’ never stopped humanity! If we can put a man on the moon, surely we can mint some more upsized notes, right?

Current Banknotes in Poland

As it stands, here’s what you can flaunt in your wallet:

  • 10 PLN
  • 20 PLN
  • 50 PLN
  • 100 PLN
  • 200 PLN
  • 500 PLN

And for those who prefer coins (because who doesn’t enjoy a pocket full of jangly metal?), here’s what’s in circulation:

  • 1 grosz
  • 2 groszy
  • 5 groszy
  • 10 groszy
  • 20 groszy
  • 50 groszy
  • 1 zloty
  • 2 zlotys
  • 5 zlotys

Since 2017, we’ve had the PLN 500 bill floating around. Some people say it’s a convenience; others argue it’s just more reason to hide your money from your neighbors. “Look at me,” they say. “I can buy a car, but I’m going to keep my finances secret on an industrial scale!”

As we ponder the economic implications — inflation, debt, that awkward feeling of being broke — let’s not forget the latest comments section is ablaze with opinions that range from nostalgic communism to rampant conspiracy theories about our government’s financial goals.

One commenter even suggested that they wouldn’t be surprised if we see denominations shoot up to the billions! “Next, we’ll be trading in differences of a million zloty for lunch!” Oh, Poland, it seems your banknotes are becoming more like a dramatic soap opera than a stable financial system!

So, will we ever see that delightful 1,000 zloty note? Only time will tell! Meanwhile, keep an eye out for those coins in your pocket and try not to lose track of which side of the currency excitement you are on.

What’s Next?

The National Bank’s stance might be clear, but in politics, things change quicker than the weather forecast. Who knows? By this time next year, we could be buried under a mountain of crisp new currency or begging for the days when all we worried about was finding change for the parking meter!

Let’s keep watching this space because money, like a good joke, often keeps us laughing – or crying – depending on how you look at it!
