Venezuelans held a vigil in Madrid to demand the release of Rocío San Miguel

This Tuesday the Venezuelan community in Madrid held a vigil to demand the release of the Venezuelan Human Rights activist, Rocío San Miguell, who on February 9 was detained at the Maiquetía International Airport, after being accused of allegedly participating in activities against the administration of Nicolas Maduro.

«My aunt is innocent and deserves due process and a fair defense. We need your continued support until Rocío regains her freedom.” This is how he stated it Marinella Díazniece of San Miguel, who urged the Spanish Government and the European Union to maintain their support for the cause.

It must be remembered that This Monday the Foreign Minister of Spain, José Manuel Albares, ratified before the UN Human Rights Council the solidarity of his country with the president of the NGO Citizen Control.

In the same way, he highlighted the importance of constant support for the voices that defend freedom, in a context marked by the arrest of San Miguel and the death of the Russian opponent Alexei Navalni.

Rocío San Miguel, faces accusations of treason, conspiracy and terrorism, and is being held in the Helicoide, detention center of the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (SEBIN).. Despite having been initially detained along with several family members, they were released, with the exception of her ex-husband, Alejandro González, who still remains in custody.

On February 17, Minister Albares spoke with the chancellor of the Nicolás Maduro administration, Yván Gil, to address the activist’s situation, although no further details were provided from her department.

San Miguel’s arrest revived concerns about what experts describe as a pattern of behavior known as a “revolving door” in the Venezuelan judicial system. This phenomenon is characterized by the release of individuals while new arrests are made with a similar frequency.

Alfredo Romero, representative of the NGO Penal Forum, who provides legal assistance to political prisoners in Venezuela, explained to AFP that this process has become common in the country. «Through negotiations like those of the Barbados Agreement, some people are released, only for others to be detained shortly afterward«.

It should be noted that the Barbados Agreement, which led to the release of 10 US citizens and 24 Venezuelans last December, was the result of conversations between the representation of Chavismo and the Venezuelan opposition, in an attempt to pave the way for presidential elections still pending. of date. However, this measure has not prevented the continuation of politically motivated arrests in the country.
