ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — The Russian embassy in Pakistan said Tuesday it was trying to verify reports that a Russian citizen had been kidnapped in the country’s restive northwest.

The publication on Social Network X did not provide further details.

A few days ago, a small rebel group led by commander Gul Bahadur announced the capture of a Russian national in the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The group posted a photo showing a man sitting next to two bearded men. Local police said the Russian diplomatic embassy has not contacted authorities about the suspected kidnapping.

The insurgents have frequently attacked Pakistani security forces and foreigners, especially Chinese nationals involved in Beijing-funded schemes, but no Russians have been targeted.

Most Russians traveling to Pakistan are mountaineers seeking to climb the northern mountains.
