The new challenge game that has been circulating widely on teenagers’ social media accounts lately is Sex Roulette. It is a challenge that, as reflected in the name of the game, sex roulette, minors are challenged to have sex with strangers – necessarily with people who do not know their identity – and the most dangerous of all without any contraceptive measures.
As Vanity Fair points out, the disclosure of this dangerous game that is trafficked among minors was made on the occasion of the pregnancy of a 14-year-old girl in Italy. According to the rules of the “game”, the 14-year-old contestant lost as she became pregnant. Lawyer Marina Kontoleo took on the case of the minor who did not even know who the father of her child was. The 14-year-old just realized that she is going through the first months of pregnancy, she broke her silence and spoke openly about this challenge.
Sex Roulette: Whoever gets pregnant loses
Conceived in Belgrade, this challenge has spread rapidly to Spain and the UK and, more recently, Italy, and has many variations. To increase the risk, in some versions one of the participants is HIV positive, but the rule of thumb is that no one knows the identity of the other participants, so no one can know who is positive. The very name is reminiscent of “Russian roulette”, where the danger of life is real and immediate.
Participating in such challenges does not only signal thrill-seeking, but often indicates a lack of awareness of our bodies and the long-term consequences of our actions: sexual roulette exposes participants to irreversible risks. The spread of such dangerous challenges raises deep questions about the emotional and psychological state of today’s youth: although sex roulette is one of the most extreme and dangerous challenges that endanger the physical and mental health of those who participate.
