When will we stop it for good?

The age-old question remains unanswered: should we continue to change the time twice a year? The time change has been in force in France since 1976, it would make it possible to save energy while keeping the waking time of each of us as close as possible to the hours of natural sunshine. According to the Environment and Energy Management Agency (Adème), the time change made it possible to save 0.07% of total energy consumption in 2021. Everyone is free to judge the relevance (there are no small savings!).

The abolition of the time change was considered in the European Union in 2018 and was then the subject of a public consultation which met with a certain enthusiasm – 6 million European citizens responded. 43% of participants mentioned the negative effects of the time change on health to justify their wish to see it disappear.

ALSO READ Time change: our advice for managing it as best as possibleThe results of this consultation reveal that, in Europe, a small majority is in favor of maintaining summer time. But the countries are overall quite divided on the timetable to adopt: two thirds are in favor of maintaining summer time, and a third in favor of winter time – mainly the countries of Southern Europe. North. The lack of consensus on the choice to make probably pushed the European Union to put the issue under the carpet, the issue is nevertheless fundamental because the change of time is not without consequences, both on health and in terms of accidentology.

The biological rhythm disrupted by the time change

Inserm has published a summary of the scientific literature on the effects of the time change on health, and they are far from insignificant. The time change would have physiological effects on our biological clock, causing a cascade of consequences such as sleep and alertness disorders, an increase in road accidents, depressive disorders and an increase in cardiovascular risk (heart attack). myocardium and stroke). Our body is subject to a large number of biological clocks leading to strong variations in hormonal secretions over 24 hours and which are disrupted by this biannual time difference.

In addition, exposure to light has very beneficial effects on the quality of sleep, on brain activity, on the cardiovascular system and even on body temperature. Scientists suggest that if daylight saving time were maintained, the sun would rise at 9:41 a.m. on December 21 – the shortest day of the year – compared to 8:41 a.m. currently, which could have a deleterious impact on health. And if winter time were maintained, sunset would occur four hours later in summer than in winter, which would encourage the French to go to bed earlier; this would therefore offer real benefits for their health.

In summary, the majority of European citizens are in favor of maintaining summer time while scientists are campaigning for maintaining… winter time! Perhaps this is the reason why this issue is so thorny and clannish… But for everyone’s health, it would be preferable, once and for all, to settle the question taking into account the very modest energy savings made and the perfect knowledge of the now proven health risks.
