Cuban Ministry of Internal Trade denies false information about food distribution in Guantánamo after Hurricane Oscar

The Ministry of Internal Trade of Cuba (MINCIN) issued an official statement denying information circulating on social networks about the distribution of food in the province of Guantánamo, recently affected by Hurricane Oscar.

According to the false publication, the Cuban government would be selling a food module composed of rice, sugar, salt and other basic products for a value of 854 pesos, a measure that has been widely criticized on digital platforms.

However, the MINCIN assures that this information is incorrect and clarified the reality regarding the distribution of aid to the victims.

In response to these rumors, the MINCIN declared: “The news circulating on digital social networks about the sale of a module to the population affected by Hurricane Oscar in the province of Guantánamo is false.”

Commerce in Cuba delivers basic basket products in Guantánamo

The entity explained that products from the regulated family basket are currently being distributed, including rice, sugar, oil, peas and chicken, as well as powdered milk for children. This aid is in the process of being delivered to the entire population of the province, at no cost to the victims.

In addition to basic products, MINCIN detailed that additional aid packages are being distributed to support affected families. Among them, they mentioned the delivery of a package of pasta per person, cans of sardines per family unit and two cans of condensed milk for children between 2 and 6 years old. “In the four most affected municipalities, this distribution is reinforced,” the Ministry reported, ensuring that the areas with the greatest damage are being prioritized.

Delivery of a free module from the World Food Program in Guantánamo

Another of the measures highlighted by MINCIN is the delivery of a free module from the World Food Program (WFP), which includes rice and peas per person and one liter of oil per family unit.

Likewise, the ministry is strengthening the distribution of personal hygiene products throughout the province, starting with the municipalities that recorded the most severe damage.

“All donations made by brother countries and international organizations are delivered free of charge to the population,” the entity assured, underlining the commitment to provide assistance to those who need it most in this time of crisis.

Finally, the MINCIN urged the population to stay informed through official channels, in order to avoid falling into rumors and misinformation. The institution also thanked international donations and support from external organizations, reaffirming that all aid is distributed free of charge and without intermediaries.
