The United States (US) technology giant, Microsoft, has publicly accused its old competitor, Google, of running a shadow or illegal campaign in Europe. This is considered to be deliberately designed to discredit Microsoft in front of regulators.
Microsoft lawyer Rima Alaily said that Google hired a firm of European cloud companies to represent the search company’s case.
“This week an astroturf group organized by Google will be launched,” wrote Microsoft lawyer Rima Alaily, quoted by CNBC, Tuesday (29/10/2024).
The group is said to be designed to discredit Microsoft before competition authorities and policymakers, as well as mislead the public.
“Google has gone to great lengths to obscure its involvement, funding and control, notably by recruiting several European cloud providers, to act as the public face of the new organization,” he added.
The conflict is a new battle between two companies battling over cloud infrastructure, as well as online advertising and software.
Google is facing increased regulatory pressure in Europe and in the US, where the company is undergoing a second antitrust trial in a case brought by the Justice Department.
Alaily suggested that Google hire advisory firm DGA Group to establish the Open Cloud Coalition. One company that chose not to participate in the group told Microsoft that the coalition would receive financial support from Google and criticized Microsoft’s practices in Europe.
Alaily said Google offered around US$ 500 million to another group, Cloud Infrastructure Service Providers in Europe, if they rejected a proposed antitrust settlement related to Microsoft. The case was finally resolved in July 2024.
