**Dr. Aisha Malik:** Thank you for having ‌me.

**Interviewer:** Lahore ‍has recently been reported as having ‌the worst air quality in the world, with an AQI of 299. What does this mean for the residents?

**Dr. Aisha Malik:**⁣ An AQI above 300 is ‌categorized⁤ as extremely harmful to health. It indicates‌ that the air may pose significant health‌ risks, particularly for sensitive groups like children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing ⁣health conditions. The current level of 299 is ‍a cause for‍ serious concern.

**Interviewer:** We know that smog is‌ a major issue in Lahore.⁣ What are the main contributors to this problem?

**Dr.⁢ Aisha‍ Malik:** The primary causes‍ of smog in Lahore include the ⁤burning of crop residues and industrial emissions. These practices release a⁤ significant amount‌ of pollutants into the air.‍ Unfortunately, this problem is exacerbated during ⁢the winter months due to weather conditions that trap these pollutants close ⁢to the ground.

**Interviewer:** What steps has the government taken ‍to address this crisis?

**Dr. Aisha Malik:** The⁢ Punjab government has issued notifications to adjust school timings, with schools not opening before 8:45 AM to limit exposure to outdoor air pollution. They are also encouraging people to check the AQI before going outside and are recommending the use of masks.

**Interviewer:** What can individuals do to protect themselves during such high pollution days?

**Dr. Aisha Malik:** Individuals should stay indoors as much ⁤as⁤ possible, particularly during ⁣peak pollution hours. If they must go out, wearing a quality mask can help reduce exposure. It’s also important to keep windows closed and use air purifiers indoors if available.

**Interviewer:** And what about the long-term solutions?

**Dr. Aisha Malik:** Long-term solutions involve stricter regulations on industrial emissions,‌ promoting alternative agricultural practices to eliminate crop burning, and increasing public awareness about air quality issues. Investing in sustainable transportation options and green⁢ spaces‍ is ‌also essential for improving the air ⁣quality in the long run.

They’ve also cracked down on industrial units that fail to comply with emission standards and initiated inspections of vehicles to identify those that contribute significantly to air pollution. These measures are part of a broader anti-smog action plan aimed at reducing pollution levels and protecting public health.

**Interviewer:** That sounds proactive. However, what can the citizens of Lahore do to help mitigate this issue?

**Dr. Aisha Malik:** Community engagement is crucial. Citizens should check the Air Quality Index before heading outdoors, wear masks when pollution levels are high, and limit outdoor activities, especially for children. They can also report any smog-producing activities to local authorities. It’s important for everyone to take individual responsibility while supporting governmental efforts to clean the air.

**Interviewer:** With Lahore’s air quality hitting such high levels of pollution, how does this compare to other cities, particularly in the region?

**Dr. Aisha Malik:** Lahore has recently topped the list of cities with the poorest air quality, surpassing places like Delhi and Mumbai, which are also heavily polluted. This points to a severe environmental crisis that not only affects the residents of Lahore but has wider implications for the region, as air pollution can travel across borders.

**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Malik, for your insights. It’s evident that urgent action is required to address Lahore’s air quality crisis. We appreciate your time and expertise on this pressing issue.

**Dr. Aisha Malik:** Thank you for having me. It’s crucial that we all work together—government, communities, and individuals—to ensure a healthier environment for everyone.
