Russian President Vladimir Putin says the Middle East is on the verge of a major war. The war taking place in Gaza has now spread to Lebanon and even involved Iran.
Putin stated that the war in the Middle East would not end until Palestine received recognition as a sovereign state. He conveyed this at the BRICS Summit which was held in Kazan, Russia, Thursday (24/10) local time.
“The level of confrontation between Israel and Iran has increased sharply. All this resembles a chain reaction and puts the entire Middle East on the verge of a full-scale war,” said Putin as quoted by VOA.
Putin said Palestine felt the burden of historical injustice and the region would remain in an atmosphere of permanent crisis with large-scale violence inevitable.
Other countries in the region are also affected. Putin said the cycle of violence would continue if Palestine did not receive recognition.
“Repairing historical injustices against the Palestinian people can guarantee peace in the Middle East,” Putin said.
“Until this problem is resolved, the vicious cycle of violence will not be broken. People will continue to live in an atmosphere of permanent crisis, with large-scale violence inevitable,” he added.
Chinese President Xi Jinping at the same forum said there must be a complete ceasefire in Gaza. The war which then spread to Lebanon must also be stopped. Xi reminded the importance of a two-state solution to end the war.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian criticized international organizations, especially the UN, for failing to end the conflict. He considered the UN to be ineffective in quelling the war in the Middle East.
“The flames of war continue to burn in the Gaza Strip and Lebanese cities, and international institutions, especially the UN Security Council as a driver of international peace and security, do not have the necessary effectiveness to extinguish the flames of this crisis,” said Pezeshkian. (Z-9)
