Texas State Women’s Tennis Dominates at Bobcat Invitational 2023

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women’s tennis team concluded its fall season with an impressive performance at the Bobcat Invitational held this weekend, showcasing their strength and skill. Over the course of this two-day event, the Bobcats amassed a remarkable total of 22 victories in both doubles and singles matches, while remarkably minimizing their losses to just four matches.

Coach Kendall Brooks expressed his satisfaction with the team’s results, stating, “I was really happy with our performance this weekend. The girls came out each match, competed hard, and got the job done.” He further emphasized the importance of their achievement, declaring, “Only losing four matches all weekend is huge and a great way for us to end the fall season.”

Singles
The team achieved a noteworthy 14 wins in the singles segment of the tournament while only experiencing three defeats across three rounds of competition.

Kiana Graham
Kiana Graham turned in an outstanding performance, winning all three of her singles matches at the Bobcat Invitational, each in straight sets. Her most commanding victory was against ULM’s Vanja Cado, where Graham swept the match with an astonishing score of 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round.

Tadiwa Mauchi
Tadiwa Mauchi contributed significantly by finishing with a perfect 2-0 record in singles play during the Invitational. Her first match was an intense contest against St. Mary’s Karen Kondo, where she triumphed after a tightly contested battle, finishing with scores of 7-5, 3-6, 16-14. Unfortunately, Mauchi had to forfeit her opportunity to compete in the third round.

Callie Creath
Callie Creath matched her teammates by also winning all three of her matches. She notably secured victories against two competitors from ULM, winning decisively 6-1, 6-1 against Mariia Iordanova and following up with a strong performance against Camilia Molina, winning 6-2, 6-4.

Sofia Fortuno
Sofia Fortuno faced some early adversity, dropping her first match against Troy’s Valeriia Avdeeva with scores of 5-7, 2-6. However, she bounced back impressively, claiming two victories, including a comeback win over ULM’s Lucia Fernandez, finishing at 5-7, 6-3, 10-5, and also securing a victory against Troy’s Hagar Amin Ramadan with a score of 6-1, 2-1.

Emily Niers
Emily Niers started her weekend on a tough note, suffering a heavy defeat in her first match against UIW’s Smilia Matovic with a score of 0-6, 0-6. Resiliently, she secured victory in her final two matches, winning her second-round matchup 7-5, 6-3, followed by a 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 win in her last match.

Ireland Simme
Ireland Simme had a strong start at the Bobcat Invitational, capturing victories in her first two matches, winning convincingly with scores of 6-3, 6-1 in her opener and 6-4, 6-2 in her second match. However, she encountered a setback in her final match against Troy’s Emilia Namyslo, where she lost in a close three-set battle, final scores being 7-6, 4-6, 10-4.

Doubles
In doubles action, the Bobcats excelled, achieving eight wins against just one loss over the nine matches contested throughout the tournament.

Sofia Fortuno/Ireland Simme
The dynamic duo of Sofia Fortuno and Ireland Simme excelled in the doubles category, finishing with a flawless 3-0 record and outscoring their opponents 18-8. Their standout performance was a commanding 6-1 defeat of ULM’s Camilia Molina and Lucia Fernandez in the second round.

Kiana Graham/Tadiwa Mauchi
The partnership of Kiana Graham and Tadiwa Mauchi also demonstrated notable skill, notching two wins throughout the weekend. They secured their opening match with a decisive 6-0 scoreline and later triumphed over St. Mary’s duo of Alessia Terlizzi and Paula Garrote in the final round, defeating them 6-4.

Callie Creath/Emily Niers
The pair of Callie Creath and Emily Niers joined their teammates in going undefeated in doubles during the tournament, winning their matches with scores of 6-4, 6-4, and 6-2.

The Bobcats will now take a break before resuming competition with their spring season opener against Southeast Missouri State on January 18 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
