Seekirchen shows doubters in the Salzburg league: standard goals are no shame

After the top game was moved to Grödig’s artificial turf at short notice, the next champion set a new start record in the Salzburg league.

Seekirchen is in a class of its own in the Salzburg league. By now there should be no doubts about it. The front runner also won the summit in Grödig on Saturday and extended their lead to eleven points with a 2-1 win. It was the 13th win in the 13th first round match. In this millennium, no club has had a better start to a Salzburg League season. Anif stumbled in 2002 after twelve victories at the start, but in the end he celebrated the championship title undefeated. Seekirchen is now taking big steps towards its promotion coup.

“The title race is over. And Seekirchen deserve to be up there – even if they weren’t any better in the top game,” says Grödig’s coach Arsim Deliu, whose team put up a strong fight on Saturday. Andrej Lazarevic gave the home team, who had the advantage before the break, the lead in the second half after a fine move. But Felix Eliasch and Andreas Pär uncompromisingly turned the game around based on standard situations.

And yes, even if some people don’t want to admit it and downplay Seekirchen: standard goals count no less than goals from combinations. And the fact that the 60-goal Seekirchners, who outplay their opponents often enough, are top defensively and always shine with physical and mental strength, and are consistently successful even when the ball is at rest, does not detract from their successful run – quite the opposite. Seekirchen always finds a way to win. That’s what football is about.

The summit meeting, in which Seekirchen missed the 3-1 on the counterattack and Grödig’s Mario Lürzer missed the equalizer shortly before the end, fueled the game being moved to the aging artificial turf next to Grödig’s stadium. The evening before, the hosts informed Seekirchen that the natural turf was unplayable due to worm infestation after fertilization. Deliu rejected the exchange of home rights suggested by the guests. “We wanted to play at home. I’m not sure whether the artificial turf was an advantage for us. We didn’t train on it either,” says Grödig’s head coach. Seekirchen’s successful coach Mario Lapkalo says: “The artificial turf takes away a lot of our strengths. But we prevailed there too. We are extremely pleased with this victory.”
