WASHINGTON (AP) — Hawaii voters will be among the last in the country to cast their ballots on Election Day, which will decide races for president, the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives and both chambers of Congress across the country.
Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump and four other candidates will vie for the four electoral votes awarded by the state in the race to replace outgoing President Joe Biden, a Democrat.
The island nation has been a Democratic supporter for years. Since statehood in 1959, Hawaii voters have supported only two Republican presidential candidates: Richard Nixon in 1972 and Ronald Reagan in 1984. received more than 60% of the vote, while Hawaii-born Barack Obama received more than 70% of the preference in his two successful campaigns.
In the race for the U.S. Senate, Democratic incumbent Mazie Hirono is running for a third term against Republican Bob McDermott and two other candidates. Hirono won 71% of the vote when he was re-elected in 2018. (Brian Schatz). Hiram Fong was the only Republican to represent Hawaii in the Hawaii Senate. He left office in 1977.
In the state’s two House elections, Democrat Ed Case is seeking a sixth full term as representative of Hawaii’s 1st Legislative District, which covers the Honolulu metropolitan area. He will face Republican Patrick Lage. Democratic Rep. Jill Tokuda will run against Republican Steve Bond and two other third-party candidates in the race for the 2nd Legislative District, which covers suburban Honolulu and neighboring islands. Win re-election.
Voters will also decide on two statewide ballot measures and elect members of the state Legislature. About half of the 25 seats in the Senate and 51 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs. Democrats hold majorities in both houses of Congress.
Since Hawaii implemented mail-in elections in 2019, the state’s elections have been mainly conducted by mail.
