Prosecutor General Nida Grunskienė informed the impeachment commission of the Seimas about this on Wednesday.

“Yesterday, September 26, Remigijus Žemaitaitis was questioned as a witness about his possible criminal act,” she said.

If the prosecutors want to interrogate a member of the Seimas as a suspect, the general prosecutor should apply to the parliament for the cancellation of his legal immunity. The Seimas should vote on this.

According to N. Grunskienė, in May and June, two pre-trial investigations were started regarding public contempt and incitement of hatred against any nation, race, ethnic, religious or other group of people.

Now they have been combined into one pre-trial investigation, all possible witnesses have been interviewed.

According to N. Grunskienė, no one has been recognized as a victim yet, and no civil lawsuits have been filed.

In the course of the research, a linguistic examination was carried out, and the conclusions of other specialists were obtained.

The Prosecutor General did not predict on Wednesday when the pre-trial investigation could be completed.

Prosecutors are investigating R. Žemaitaitis’ posts on Facebook about Jews, he was angry about Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė’s visit to Israel, accused Jews of deporting and killing Lithuanians.

The parliamentarian’s remarks have been publicly condemned by Lithuanian leaders.

Due to one of these statements about the demolished Palestinian school, the “Freedom and Justice” party, condemning him as anti-Semitic, suspended R. Žemaitaitis’s membership in the party. The authorities initiated impeachment proceedings against him.

The member of the Seimas confirms his statements about Jews based on material found in the archives, claims that they are not anti-Semitic.
