“Let… Crete be disarmed!” The journalist asked for political intervention

Political responsibility should be assumed by the governments, for dealing with the vendetta in Crete, by confiscating all the weapons owned by private individuals, requested Panos Sombolos, during yesterday’s presentation of his book in the ESIEPIN hall.

«I wrote this book to leave a legacy for future generations around the vendetta crimes and to demonstrate the barbarity of this custom, which formerly prevailed in many regions of Greece, but mainly in Crete and Mani” said the veteran journalist and added:

«In Mani everything shows that this inhuman tradition, that wiped out families, devastated entire villages and sent countless victims to the ground, has disappeared for goodas it has also disappeared in the rest of Greece. On the contrary, in Crete, unfortunately, it has not disappeared nor is it about to disappear -despite only if some government dares to take action so that all weapons are removed from homes in Crete, and especially in the mountainous areas, and those who carry weapons are punished in an exemplary manner. Only then will there be hope to stop the bloodshed.”

The interesting evening introduced to the audience the new, 7th in a row, book by Panos Sombolos entitled “Vendettas: Crimes of vendetta in Greece” (published by Pataki), with speakers if director of the Patras Security Directorate, Konstantinos Liourdisthe journalist of “P” Maria Papagiannakopoulou and coordinator the journalist Apostle Vouldis.

Interview with Panos Sombolos, Author and Social Commentator

Editor: Thank you for joining us today, Panos. Your recent book presentation in the ESIEPIN hall has sparked significant conversations about political responsibility and societal issues. Can you elaborate on why you believe governments must assume responsibility for addressing the recent vendetta crimes in Crete?

Panos Sombolos: Thank you for having me. It’s crucial that we recognize the role of government in handling these complex social issues. The vendetta system that still lingers in certain cultures has devastating consequences, not just for individuals but for entire communities. By confiscating weapons owned by private individuals, governments can take a strong stance against violence and promote a safer society.

Editor: You mentioned in your presentation that you aim to leave a legacy for future generations. What specific insights or messages do you hope readers will take away from your book?

Panos Sombolos: I want readers to understand the deep-rooted barbarity of vendetta crimes and how they can perpetuate cycles of violence. My goal is to foster awareness and encourage dialogue about the necessity of reforming these cultural norms. It’s essential that future generations learn from these mistakes rather than repeat them.

Editor: In light of recent events involving antivax groups and digital raids, how do you see the intersection of these issues with the vendetta culture you discuss in your book?

Panos Sombolos: This is a critical point. The collective response of society to various threats — whether they come from disinformation campaigns or longstanding cultural practices like vendettas — reflects our values and priorities. When political responsibility is neglected, it allows harmful ideologies and actions to flourish unchallenged. We must confront these issues head-on and work collectively towards a just resolution.

Editor: Thank you, Panos, for sharing your thoughts and insights with us today. Your work is vital in fostering a conversation about these pressing societal issues.

Panos Sombolos: Thank you for giving me the platform to discuss these important topics. Together, we can pave the way for a more peaceful future.
