SINGER and young producer, Syahravi, presents a fresh interpretation of the legendary song Among the Words by Fariz RM. This is part of Fariz RM’s special album: 45 Years of Work.
This album is a platform for a number of talented young artists, including Ardhito Pramono, Hivi!, Rieka Roeslan, and others, who bring back Fariz RM’s iconic works.
Syahravi performed a modern version of the song Antara Kata, a track originally released by Fariz RM on the album Panggung Perak in 1981.

Syahravi, who has a deep interest in Indonesian music of the 70s, 80s and 90s, approached this work with an exploratory spirit.
The figure of Fariz RM, who is known as a pioneer in the use of MIDI and brought the progress of Western music to Indonesia, became the main inspiration for Syahravi in reconstructing this song with a fresh but respectful approach.
“I want to appreciate and not destroy the values and aesthetics that Mas Fariz RM has put into this song. “Respect is the main value that I hold in working on this work,” said Syahravi.

On one occasion, Syahravi listened to the version of Among the Words to Fariz RM, who gave full support to Syahravi’s interpretation.
“The approach and musical treatment that Syahravi applied for this song is something that I really thought about and wanted to apply. “Taking this song in an electronic direction with a touch of R&B was the right choice,” said Fariz RM.
According to both of them, the essence of the song Antara Kata is about respect – a value which is also a strong foundation in Syahravi’s creative process.

Syahravi played Among the Words at the Listening Party session for Fariz RM’s album: 45 Years of Work at the Financial Room, Jakarta, on October 23 2024.
“In working on this work, I wanted to maintain the identity and ideas that Mas Fariz RM brought to this song, while also adding my personal touch. “In this way, Between Words becomes a cohesive joint work that unites two generations,” he explained.
Syahravi collaborated with a number of talented musicians in the production process of this song, namely Kamga Mohammad as vocal director, Agung Munthe on keyboard and synthesizer, Taufan Wirzon on bass, and Syahravi himself on vocals, guitar and synthesizer.

The recording was carried out at the Roemah Iponk studio by Ivan Gojaya, with the mixing and mastering process by Stevano.
At the end of the song, Syahravi included the outro of the song Barcelona, one of Fariz RM’s monumental works, as an additional tribute to the legend.
For the cover art for Among the Words, Syahravi recreated Fariz RM’s iconic album cover Living in the Westernization of the World, as a visual tribute to Fariz RM’s long journey in the world of music.
With an arrangement that still respects the authenticity and essence of the original work, Syahravi hopes that his version of Among the Words can be accepted by all music lovers, especially Fariz RM fans, as well as becoming a bridge for the younger generation to become more familiar with the great works of musicians from previous eras. Editor: You mentioned the importance of respect in your interpretation. How did you ensure you honored Fariz RM’s original vision while infusing your style?
Syahravi: Respecting the original creation was my top priority. I approached it with an exploratory spirit, incorporating electronic elements and R&B influences, which I felt complemented the song without overshadowing its core. I wanted to capture both the nostalgia and the contemporary vibe.
Editor: It’s wonderful to see such a blend of styles. How did Fariz RM himself respond to your version?
Syahravi: I was incredibly nervous to share it with him, but he was very supportive! He loved the direction I took and felt it was aligned with his original vision. His feedback meant the world to me, and it reinforced my approach to the project.
Editor: That’s fantastic! What do you hope listeners take away from your rendition of ”Among the Words”?
Syahravi: I hope they feel the same respect and love for the music as I do. It’s about bridging generations of music lovers and showing that classics can evolve while still honoring their roots.

Editor: You also included a tribute in the form of the outro from his iconic song, “Barcelona.” What significance does that hold for you?
Syahravi: That was a very intentional choice. “Barcelona” is a monumental work that showcases Fariz RM’s artistry. By incorporating it, I wanted to pay homage and show how interconnected his music is with mine. It’s a way of celebrating his legacy and reminding listeners of his influence on Indonesian music.

Syahravi: I hope they experience a sense of nostalgia and connection to the rich history of Indonesian music.
