Springboks Adapt Squad for End-of-Year Tour: Willemse Injured, Hanekom Called Up

Springboks Adapt Squad for End-of-Year Tour: Willemse Injured, Hanekom Called Up

Former Junior Springbok Cameron Hanekom, who has been in exceptional form for the Vodacom Bulls throughout the current season, was selected as a participant in the Springbok alignment camps earlier this year, highlighting his impressive development towards international rugby.

Damian Willemse sustained a significant injury while crossing the try line for the DHL Stormers during their 28-17 loss against the Glasgow Warriors in Stellenbosch, which took place in round six of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship on Saturday evening. This unfortunate incident has left the Springbok squad with a gap in their backline.

The revised Springbok squad now comprises 20 forwards and 15 backs, marking a strategic shift in team composition. Willemse’s exit from the lineup follows the earlier withdrawal of utility forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels due to a troublesome ankle injury. This led to the swift call-ups of Johan Grobbelaar (hooker) and Wilco Louw (prop) to reinforce the squad’s front line.

Head coach Rassie Erasmus acknowledged the impact of Willemse’s absence on the team, noting that it is a substantial loss. However, he firmly believes that Hanekom’s inclusion is deserved, as the player has been persistently pressing for a spot on the team for the past season.

“Damian has demonstrated remarkable skill on the field for the DHL Stormers since making his comeback from a frustrating injury, and we genuinely empathize with him for missing out on all 10 Test matches this season,” expressed Erasmus candidly.

“In light of Wilco and Johan’s call-up, there is anticipation for what Cameron can deliver upon joining the squad. He was part of our alignment camps earlier this season, which means he is already familiar with the team’s strategies and the Springbok ethos, and we are confident that he will seize this opportunity with enthusiasm and energy.”

Erasmus further elaborated: “We are reassured by the depth and versatility we possess among the backs in our squad, which has prompted our decision to bring in an additional forward to enhance our loose forward options.”

Damian Willemse leaves the field on Saturday, visibly disappointed.

The Springboks are set to depart for a highly anticipated training camp in Jersey, hailed as the largest of the Channel Islands nestled between England and France, on Sunday. Following this, the team will travel to Edinburgh on Sunday, November 3, where they will gear up for the opening Test of their European tour.

During this traditional end-of-year tour, the Boks will face formidable opponents, including Scotland in Edinburgh on Sunday, November 10, England in London on Saturday, November 16, and concluding with Wales in Cardiff on Saturday, November 23.
