Unfortunately for Johnson, he has already been ruled out for Carolina’s Week 8 matchup against the Denver Broncos, casting a shadow over possible trade discussions. When pressed on the reasoning behind this decision, head coach Dave Canales suggested that inquiries regarding Johnson’s health-related decision should be directed toward general manager Dan Morgan and executive vice president of football operations Brandt Tillis.
Currently, Johnson is operating under an expiring contract which still carries $3.5 million in remaining salary for the latter half of the season. The Panthers are reportedly seeking a “mid-round” pick as compensation for his contract, and multiple teams have already shown interest in acquiring him, according to Schefter.
Conversely, Kirk remains under contract for one more year at a base salary of $15.5 million after this season. Serving as a complementary target to quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Kirk has contributed 25 catches for 320 yards and one touchdown through the same seven-game stretch. However, Kirk’s position could be further compromised as the Jaguars grapple with a disappointing 2-5 record heading into Week 8.
Should the Jaguars falter to a 2-6 record this weekend, they may be more inclined to entertain offers for Kirk, as noted by Schefter. With significant trades already reshaping the league—such as the Kansas City Chiefs acquiring Hopkins, the New York Jets landing Adams, and the Buffalo Bills trading for Cooper—the Pittsburgh Steelers currently find themselves in urgent need of a wide receiver. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini recently indicated that general manager Omar Khan could target either Johnson or Kirk to strengthen a receiving core that is currently led by George Pickens.
