“The society of Sakartvel supports the country’s European future. I hope that your country will be accompanied by pro-Western geopolitical decisions and determination to pursue European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The future of Sakartveli now depends on the ability to focus on reforms and foster European values: democracy, human rights and adherence to the principles of the rule of law,” said the president.
At the meeting, the head of the country emphasized that Lithuania remains a consistent supporter of Sakartvel’s European integration.
The President said that in order for Sakartveli to obtain the status of an EU country candidate, it is necessary to demonstrate progress in carrying out reforms and implementing EC recommendations, especially in issues such as political depolarization of society, judicial reforms, de-oligarchization and media freedom.
According to the head of Lithuania, general synchronization of Sakartvel’s geopolitical course with the EU’s foreign policy priorities and consistent support of the EU’s sanctions policy against the aggressor Russia are also important.
The Lithuanian leader emphasized that Lithuania stands for Sakartvela’s European integration process together with Ukraine and Moldova, and urged Sakartvela not to lose the historic opportunity to obtain the status of an EU country candidate.
At the meeting, the presidents also discussed the security situation in the region.
