HOMESTEAD, Fla. — In a highly anticipated debut, Frankie Muniz, renowned for his role in the iconic television series ”Malcolm in the Middle,” found himself finishing 33rd in the Truck Series race on Saturday. This event marked his first official race after announcing plans to become a full-time NASCAR competitor next season, a move that has generated considerable interest among fans and the racing community.
At 38 years old, Muniz has transitioned from a part-time racer to a serious contender in the NASCAR Truck Series, getting behind the wheel of the No. 33 Ford for Reaume Brothers Racing. This season, he made two previous starts for the Reaume team in the competitive Truck Series, showcasing his commitment to racing.
Despite his confidence in the potential success of his team, the race on Saturday was plagued by mechanical issues that hampered his performance. Muniz qualified 31st out of 34 cars, which set a challenging tone for his debut as a full-time driver.
Earlier this season, Muniz took to the track in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series, including a notable participation in the season opener at the famed Daytona International Speedway. He has also made appearances in the ARCA Series, which serves as an essential stepping stone within the NASCAR developmental ranks.
Muniz expressed his determination, stating that his ultimate aspiration as a full-time driver is to clinch race victories.
”I want to be the best,” he said with conviction, “but realistically, the series is tough. There are a lot of good drivers and a lot of good teams, but I think if we could consistently be in the top 20 that would be a huge achievement for us.”
The former child actor has harbored a passion for racing for many years, having previously driven the pace car during the 2001 Daytona 500, a race that was historically significant due to the tragic loss of seven-time Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt on the final lap.

Frankie Muniz: Thank you for having me! It’s definitely been a whirlwind, but I’m excited to be here.
Editor: You finished 33rd in your first race, which, while not podium-worthy, is still a monumental step as you embark on this new chapter in NASCAR. How do you feel about your performance?
Frankie Muniz: Honestly, I’m just grateful to have had the opportunity to race. It was an incredible experience! Sure, I wanted to finish higher, but I learned so much out there. It’s a different world compared to what I’m used to, but I’m committed to improving and adapting.
Editor: Absolutely! Transitioning from acting to racing is no small feat. What inspired you to make this career shift as you approach 40?
Frankie Muniz: Racing has always been a passion of mine. Even when I was acting, I had a strong desire to race, but I never pursued it seriously. Over the past few years, I’ve spent a lot of time working on my skills, and now I’m ready to give it a full shot. Plus, it’s never too late to chase your dreams!
Editor: The announcement of your full-time NASCAR plans next season has certainly generated buzz among fans. How has the reaction been from the racing community so far?
Frankie Muniz: The response has been overwhelmingly positive! I’ve received so much support. Fellow drivers, teams, and fans have all been welcoming. It feels great to know that while I might be a newcomer to this sport, I’m part of a community that’s so passionate and inclusive.

Frankie Muniz: I hope so! While I love my roots in acting, racing is where my heart is right now. I want my fans to see me as someone who takes risks and goes after what he loves. If I can inspire even a few people to pursue their passions, that would be amazing.

Becoming a full-time NASCAR competitor next season has certainly sparked excitement among fans. What are your expectations for this upcoming season?
Frankie Muniz: I have high hopes for the upcoming season! My main goal is to consistently finish in the top 20 and learn as much as I can from the experienced drivers around me. I want to build my confidence, develop my skills, and hopefully, work my way up to being a contender for race victories. It’s a tough field, but I’m ready to put in the work.
Editor: You mentioned earlier that the race was marred by mechanical issues. How do you plan to tackle challenges like these moving forward?
Frankie Muniz: Every race has its hurdles, and I think it’s important to stay positive when things go wrong. Mechanical issues are part of racing, and they can happen to anyone. I’ll work closely with my team to understand what went wrong and how we can prevent it in the future. It’s about growing together as a team and learning from each experience.
Editor: With your background in acting, do you find any crossover skills that help you in racing?
Frankie Muniz: Funny enough, there are similarities! Both require focus, dedication, and a willingness to learn. In acting, you have to think on your feet and adapt to changing situations just like you do on the track. Plus, I’ve learned the importance of teamwork—whether it’s in front of the camera or when I’m in the pit.
Editor: You’ve had some experience in other racing formats too, like the Xfinity Series and ARCA. How have these experiences prepared you for the Truck Series?
Frankie Muniz: Every race has taught me something different. The Xfinity Series was a great chance to push myself against tougher competition, and the ARCA Series helped me get comfortable with the car and track dynamics. Each time I get behind the wheel, I become more familiar with the racing environment, which helps me feel more at home in the Truck Series.
