The town of Landázuri, Santander, is shocked after the murder of Liyen Cubides, a 16-year-old teenager, who was shot dead in the early hours of October 26. The authorities have identified Elver Pineda, Liyen’s stepfather, as the main suspect and are currently seeking him to hold him accountable for the incident.

According to the first reports, the young woman was at the home of relatives due to an unresolved conflict at home. That night, Liyen returned home to collect some belongings, as he had plans to visit other relatives. At that time the tragic events occurred that resulted in his death.

The mayor of Landázuri, Carlos Morales, spoke about the event: “A girl was murdered in the Santa Bárbara area, in the urban area of the municipality. He was going to pick up clothes from his house, where he stayed for family reasons. “We were not aware that there were any problems.” Additionally, Morales reported that the National Police was alerted by a nearby patrol and that, although the agents provided first aid, Liyen arrived at the medical center without vital signs.

Investigations are ongoing, and the Institute of Legal Medicine will be in charge of finding out if there was any type of abuse prior to the crime. The mayor also mentioned that, despite rumors about a family altercation, the family had not informed authorities about possible risks.

For his part, the governor of Santander, Juvenal Díaz, expressed his indignation: “I raise my voice in rejection of the murder of Liyen Cubides. “It is crucial that efforts be intensified to capture and bring to justice the alleged perpetrator.”

As the investigation progresses, Liyen’s family requests support to repatriate his body, while authorities continue the search for Elver Pineda in order to clarify this tragic event.
