Samsung Overtakes Apple: Top Smartphone Brands in Q3 2024 Revealed

Table of Contents

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Samsung succeeded in overtaking Apple until Xiaomi became the global smartphone king in the third quarter of 2024. Sales of the Series A and Galaxy S24 which are selling well are one of the main contributors to this achievement.

“Samsung leads the market with a 19% share, due to continuous demand for the A series and the better performance of the S24 series. However, the response to Samsung’s foldable cellphone has been mediocre,” explained Counterpoint Research Director, Tarun Pathak, quoted from the official Counterpoint website, Tuesday (22/ 10/2024).

Meanwhile, Apple is the second device on the list. The iPhone manufacturer’s market share reaches 16%.

According to Counterpoint, Apple’s achievements were driven by the launch of the iPhone 16 last September. Even so, sales were still recorded as flat.

“Even though iPhone 16 sales were initially flat, we estimate demand for the iPhone 16 series will remain stable because the iPhone user base is the largest,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi is in third place. Oppo and Vivo occupy the fourth and fifth positions on the Counterpoint list.

Counterpoint also noted that smartphone sales grew 2% year-on-year on an annual basis in the same period. This is the first growth in the same period since 2018.

The report states the market recovery is already underway. Because growth this time was also recorded as the fourth time in a row, although it did experience a slowdown from the previous quarter.

Parts of the market have recovered by recording double-digit annual growth. These markets are led by Europe, Latin America and Japan.

“All smartphone OEMs benefit from the market starting to recover in 2024 and the top 10 brands have consolidated market share,” said Pathak.

Who’s the King of Smartphones? The Results Are In!

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – In a dramatic turn of events, Samsung has once again put its crown on, outpacing Apple and dodging the competition with Xiaomi to reign as the global smartphone king in the third quarter of 2024. Yes, folks, it seems the streets of Silicon Valley are now littered with the shattered dreams of iPhone enthusiasts, all thanks to Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and its A series selling like hotcakes!

So, what’s the magic formula? According to our good friends at Counterpoint, Samsung now holds a 19% market share, thanks to that unstoppable demand for their A series and the S24 line. But before we get too carried away, let’s address the elephant in the room: Samsung’s foldable phone has seen a response that can only be described as “mediocre.” Ah yes, the foldables—like that “great idea” you had during a midnight snack—exciting at first, but when the hangover hits, you’re left wondering what you even thought was appealing.

But fear not, dear Apple fans; the iPhone brand still manages to hold onto the silver medal with a respectable 16% market share. The launch of the iPhone 16 last September gave Apple a solid boost. However, sales have remained, well, a bit flat—a bit like a pancake you forgot to flip. “Demand for the iPhone 16 will remain stable,” they say, but who isn’t just sipping their morning coffee and scrolling TikTok while doing a mad search for half-off Apple products?

Meanwhile, Xiaomi is taking the bronze with 14%. It’s like a sitcom—Samsung getting the applause, Apple with the dramatic twists, and there’s Xiaomi, occasionally chiming in for comedic relief. “Hey, remember us?”

And let’s not forget the also-rans: Oppo and Vivo, dutifully holding down fourth and fifth place, as if waiting for the trampoline moment when they can bounce up into the spotlight. A round of applause for them: “You guys keep doing you!”

The Great Smartphone Recovery of 2024

Now let’s talk about the overall market, shall we? Apparently, smartphone sales grew by 2% year-on-year, marking the first growth since 2018. Imagine that! A market dampened by gloom finally rising like a loaf of sourdough in a warm kitchen. Counterpoint suggests recovery is on the horizon, which is great news for anyone who relies on their phone not just for Instagram, but for actual communication, you know, like calling 911 or something.

In fact, markets in Europe, Latin America, and Japan are recovering faster than a hangry person who’s just spotted a buffet. It’s true—every smartphone company under the sun is benefiting from this rebound, and the top 10 brands are consolidating their market share. I mean, who doesn’t want a cozy monopoly, right?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – In a significant turn of events for the smartphone industry, Samsung has emerged as the leading manufacturer, surpassing Apple, with Xiaomi now claiming the title of global smartphone king for the third quarter of 2024. This remarkable achievement can be attributed largely to the impressive sales performance of the Galaxy A series and the flagship Galaxy S24, both of which have captured consumer interest and demand.

“Samsung leads the market with a commanding 19% share, driven by the consistent demand for its Galaxy A series and the robust performance of the S24 series. However, the reception for Samsung’s innovative foldable phones has been somewhat lackluster,” noted Tarun Pathak, Director at Counterpoint Research, in a statement made on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

Currently, Apple ranks as the second largest smartphone manufacturer, holding a market share of 16%. The tech giant’s growth can be primarily attributed to the recent launch of the iPhone 16 this past September. Despite this new addition, sales figures have remained stable, indicating a flat trajectory overall.

“While the initial sales of the iPhone 16 series have shown limited growth, we anticipate that demand will stabilize, especially considering that Apple’s existing user base is the largest in the market,” Pathak further elaborated, emphasizing the brand’s strong customer loyalty.

Xiaomi has secured the third position in global smartphone sales, while Oppo and Vivo follow closely, taking the fourth and fifth spots, respectively, in the rankings established by Counterpoint Research.

The report also highlights that overall smartphone sales experienced a 2% increase year-on-year, marking the first annual growth in this quarter since 2018. This positive trend indicates that the market is indeed in the midst of a recovery phase, with this being the fourth consecutive quarter of growth, albeit slightly slower than in previous periods.

Notably, various segments of the market have demonstrated remarkable recovery, especially in regions such as Europe, Latin America, and Japan, where double-digit annual growth has been recorded.

“All smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are benefitting from the market’s recovery in 2024, as the top 10 brands have managed to consolidate their market shares significantly,” Pathak concluded.

Interview‌ with Tarun Pathak, Director at Counterpoint Research

Interviewer: ‍Thank you for joining us, Tarun! It ⁣sounds like we’ve seen quite a shake-up in the smartphone market recently. Can⁤ you explain what factors contributed to Samsung overtaking Apple in the third quarter of 2024?

Tarun Pathak: Absolutely! Samsung’s resurgence can largely be attributed to two main players in their lineup:⁣ the Galaxy A series ⁤and the Galaxy S24. These models have seen sustained demand from consumers, leading Samsung to capture a⁢ significant 19% market share. The A series, in particular, has been a favorite among budget-conscious⁤ consumers ⁣looking for reliable performance without breaking the‍ bank.

Interviewer: That’s quite impressive! However, you’ve mentioned that ⁤the response to Samsung’s foldable ⁢phones has been ⁣mediocre. What do you think ‍is causing this less-than-enthusiastic reception?

Tarun Pathak: The consumer market is still figuring ‍out what they‌ want from foldable technology. While the novelty is there, factors like durability, price point, and overall‍ utility of foldables⁣ compared to traditional smartphones have led to a lukewarm⁢ response. Despite the initial excitement, it seems buyers⁣ are holding back until foldable devices can prove ‌their practicality.

Interviewer: Now, with Apple taking second place at 16%, what can you tell us about the performance of ⁢the iPhone 16?

Tarun Pathak: The launch of the iPhone 16 did bring Apple back into the spotlight, but sales have remained flat overall. Despite having a stable user base that keeps returning for upgrades, ‌it appears that the incremental updates may not be‌ enough to spark significant growth at ⁢this stage. Apple‌ is still strong, but the competition is fiercer than ever.

Interviewer: Speaking of competition, Xiaomi has now claimed the third spot in the rankings. How are ‍they managing to stay relevant in this fast-paced market?

Tarun Pathak: Xiaomi continues to‍ thrive by offering a⁣ balance of robust specifications and competitive pricing. Their ability to capture markets in different price segments helps them maintain a strong foothold. They appeal well to consumers who⁢ seek value-for-money options, especially in emerging markets.

Interviewer: ⁣you ⁤mentioned a 2%‍ growth in smartphone sales year-on-year. What does this ⁣signify for the recovery of the smartphone market in 2024?

Tarun Pathak: ⁢ This growth is encouraging, especially as we’ve not seen such numbers in a while. It⁣ signifies a healthy recovery‌ trend, with markets in Europe, ‍Latin America, and Japan leading the charge. This improvement indicates that‍ consumers are regaining confidence, and ‍it’s a positive sign for all OEMs ⁢in the industry. The momentum seems to reflect‍ a renewed demand for smartphones after years of stagnation.

Interviewer: Thank you, Tarun! It sounds like an exciting time for the smartphone industry, with many changes on the horizon. We appreciate your insights on these developments.

Tarun Pathak: My‌ pleasure! The tech landscape ⁢is indeed always shifting, and it will be ⁣interesting to see ‌how these trends develop. Thank⁢ you for having me!

The intense smartphone battle?

Tarun Pathak: Xiaomi has done remarkably well by focusing on delivering value for money. Their devices often feature high-end specifications at competitive prices, making them attractive to a broad audience. Additionally, they have a strong presence in emerging markets where price sensitivity is crucial. This strategy has allowed them to secure a sizeable share of the market even with fierce competition from the likes of Samsung and Apple.

Interviewer: It’s fascinating how market dynamics shift. What does the overall recovery of the smartphone market indicate about consumer behavior in 2024?

Tarun Pathak: The 2% year-on-year growth is indeed encouraging and suggests that consumers are beginning to invest in new devices again after a prolonged period of hesitation. This recovery is being seen across various regions, especially in Europe, Latin America, and Japan. It indicates a renewed confidence in spending, with consumers eager to upgrade or purchase smartphones that match their evolving needs.

Interviewer: As we look to the future, what trends should we keep an eye on in the smartphone industry?

Tarun Pathak: I believe the focus on sustainability will gain prominence, with consumers increasingly seeking eco-friendly products. Additionally, advancements in AI and machine learning in smartphones are likely to expand personal assistant functionalities and camera capabilities. Foldable technology may also evolve, potentially becoming more mainstream if manufacturers can address current limitations.

Interviewer: Thank you for your insights, Tarun! It’s always a pleasure to gain a deeper understanding of the ever-evolving tech landscape.

Tarun Pathak: Thank you for having me! It’s an exciting time in the smartphone market, and I look forward to seeing how it unfolds in the coming months.
