In a disappointing start to their four-game Canadian road trip, the San Diego Gulls succumbed to the Abbotsford Canucks, falling 3-1 in a contest that showcased both promise and frustration for the visiting team.
Yegor Sidorov ignited the game with a striking goal just 2:57 into the first period, marking his third goal in only two games. His impressive scoring was supported by Judd Caulfield, whose assist extended his own point streak to two games, providing a glimmer of hope for the Gulls early on.
The Canucks rallied back with a power play goal from Danila Klimovich at 9:22, leveling the score at 1-1. Just 4:05 later, Auta Raty delivered the game-winning goal, deftly redirecting a point shot just in front of Gulls’ goaltender Calle Clang. The Canucks added a final insurance goal by Mark Friedman at 11:28 of the second period, solidifying their lead to 3-1.
“We didn’t look ready to play from the very first shift,” head coach Matt McIlvane reflected after the game. “We blew faceoff coverage in our zone and iced the puck twice. Then we were able to bounce back, have a couple of sustained good shifts together and get on the board. From there, we took a tough penalty in the offensive zone that gave them the power play. As often happens when you take bad penalties, they get on the board. Really, from that point onward, we struggled to find any semblance of our usual play.” He went on to add, “The second period was totally outplayed, and while we made an effort in the third, it wasn’t enough. They were simply quicker and more aggressive than us.”
Despite the team’s loss, Gulls goaltender Calle Clang delivered a commendable performance, stopping 35 of the 38 shots he faced.
“He was excellent. He gave us a chance. The only reason it’s close and we’re playing with the goalie out at the end of the game is Calle,” praised McIlvane, highlighting Clang’s resilience in the net.
Determined to turn the tide, the Gulls will look for redemption in a rematch against the Canucks tomorrow night. Fans can anticipate an intense showdown as puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Austin Rush: Thanks for having me! It was a frustrating loss for the Gulls, for sure. They came out strong with Yegor Sidorov scoring early in the first period, which really gave the team some momentum. However, as the game went on, they struggled to capitalize on their chances and defensively, they seemed to falter against the Canucks’ offensive pressure.

Austin Rush: Early goals can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it sets a positive tone for the game and boosts confidence. Sidorov’s goal not only showcased his skill but also highlighted the Gulls’ potential. However, after that initial spark, they couldn’t maintain it, and as frustration built, it affected their overall play.
Editor: Judd Caulfield also contributed with an assist, extending his point streak. How significant is that for him personally, and for the team in general?
Austin Rush: It’s crucial for a player like Caulfield to have that consistency, especially on a team that’s looking for offensive production. His point streak shows that he’s finding his rhythm, and it’s something the Gulls can lean on. Having players step up amidst adversity is vital, and if he can keep this momentum going, it could serve as a catalyst for the rest of the team.

Austin Rush: Absolutely, there were some bright spots. The Gulls have a lot of young talent, and that’s evident with Sidorov and Caulfield leading the charge. The coaching staff can take comfort in their ability to generate offense in spurts. If they can tighten up their defensive game and find a way to stay resilient after setbacks, they still have a chance to turn this road trip around.

Head coach Matt McIlvane mentioned the lack of readiness at the start, and that definitely affected their ability to maintain control throughout the game.
Editor: Calle Clang had a strong performance in net despite the loss. How crucial was his play in keeping the team competitive?
Austin Rush: Absolutely essential. Clang faced a barrage of shots, and his ability to stop 35 of them was outstanding. Without his resilience in goal, the score could have been significantly worse. McIlvane recognized his contributions post-game, highlighting how Clang kept them in the match and was a bright spot amidst the disappointment.
