Narkya – Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alp Arslan Bayraktar announced yesterday, Friday, the signing of a new agreement between Ankara and Mogadishu for oil and gas exploration in Somalia.

The Turkish Minister’s announcement came during the reception of the Turkish exploration ship “Reis Oruç” in the port of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, to begin its mission of research and exploration in accordance with previous agreements between the two countries.

Bayrakdar said that the new agreement was signed between the Turkish Oil Company “TPAO” and the Somali Petroleum Authority, through which oil and gas exploration will be carried out in the Arab country, expressing his happiness at signing the new agreement.

He pointed out that under the new agreement, oil and gas exploration activities will be carried out in Somali territory.

The ship “Al-Rais Oruj” arrived in Mogadishu according to a memorandum of understanding concluded between the two countries last March, to explore, evaluate, develop and produce oil in the Somali land and sea areas.

This year, Türkiye and Somalia signed a cooperation agreement in the defense and economic fields during the visit of the Somali Defense Minister to Ankara.

Bayraktar said today that ships belonging to the Turkish Naval Forces Command will accompany “Rais Oruc” during its “historic” mission in Somalia.

Last July 18, the two countries signed a production agreement for three marine areas, each covering an area of about 5,000 square kilometers in the Somali maritime areas, according to Birakdar.

The mission of the Turkish exploration ship “Al-Rais Oruc” in Somalia is scheduled to last 7 months, and it will be accompanied by the two support and support ships “Zaganos Pasha” and “Sinjar”, the tracking ship “Ataman”, in addition to two frigates of the Turkish Navy.

Today, a reception for the ship was held in Mogadishu, in the presence of Somali and Turkish officials, led by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who described the event as a “historic day.”

The ship will store the seismic research data that it will collect off the Somali coast, in the data processing directorate of the Turkish Oil Company “TPAO” in the capital, Ankara, and if positive indicators are reached, the process of exploring for energy resources in the region will begin.
