National Day 2024: This is what you can experience around Heldenplatz this year

Table of Contents

As usual, some doors will open in Austria on tomorrow’s national holiday – some will open for the first time.

The annual exhibition of the Armed Forces on Vienna’s Heldenplatz has a long tradition – this is taking place for the 29th time. In addition to the inauguration of around 1,200 recruits, weapons and vehicles, including the “Lion” helicopter and the “Skyranger” anti-aircraft system, will be presented there.

At the press conference on Heldenplatz, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (VP) said that the army wanted to show “what it can do” with the “large contingent.” The tank column was then received by Minister Tanner. Tanner would like to keep her position, she said on the sidelines of the event. It is her “dream job”, but the composition of the next government remains to be seen.

The army is also represented in Salzburg: Those interested can also visit the Schwarzenberg barracks, where around 700 new soldiers will be sworn in on Saturday. Afterwards, a combat demonstration by the emergency services is planned. There will also be a flag jump and flights by the air force stationed in Salzburg.

There will also be a lot going on in and around the Hofburg, the Federal Chancellery and the Parliament: After the traditional wreath-laying ceremony in the crypt on Heldenplatz by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and the Federal Government, the celebrations will begin in the morning. Both the presidential office and parliament invite you to the open day until 5 p.m.

Tours of the House offer an insight into the committee rooms, which are otherwise not accessible to the public. The Federal Chancellery on Ballhausplatz and the Hofburg also offer tours – the Federal President himself opens the gates at 10 a.m.

Although the Freedom Party is currently less in the mood to celebrate due to the Federal President’s mandate to form a government, Karl Nehammer, the Blues are nevertheless also inviting people to an event. Behind the parliament there is free food from the goulash cannon and a food truck decorated with the portrait of the Styrian FP regional leader Mario Kunasek.
