MADRID.- A family of four died in a strong fire caused by the explosion of a cell phone that was left charging.
The tragic event occurred in the Sevillian town of Guillenain Spain.
The victims were a couple aged 48 and 52 and their two children: a 21-year-old young man and a 16-year-old teenager.
Family dies after cell phone explosion they were charging
According to the report of the Civil Guard Spanish, last Sunday four people from the same family lost their lives when they were trapped by a fire inside their home.
The report indicates that the fire started on the ground floor of the house and spread quickly, while the family slept on the second floor.
Investigators found the remains of a cell phone on a sofa in the living room of the house, on the first floor.
Said device would have exploded when overheating during charging, so it caught fire immediately. The sofa served as a fire dispersion element.
The family was on the second floor, where they were trapped by the fire on the lower floor.
“Uncontrolled chemical reaction”
The investigators of the accident indicated that the combustion occurred as a result of a battery “which is normally lithium” and that works by “transforming chemical energy into electrical energy.”
The causes of the incident could be related to “an uncontrolled chemical reaction.”
Given the tragedy in Spain, experts warn that we must make sure “that the cell phone does not get too hot.”
They also ask to respect the manufacturer’s advice on charging time: “If the mobile charges in five hours, you should not leave it plugged in overnight.”
