Christ the Redeemer, the gigantic statue that crowns the Corcovado hill in Rio de Janeiro and is one of the greatest symbols of this Brazilian city, was illuminated this Wednesday with the colors green and yellow in tribute to the deceased “king” Edson Arantes do Nascimento ‘Pelé’, who would be turning 84 this Tuesday.

The special lighting that dressed the statue in the colors of the Brazilian national team uniform was a joint tribute from the Christ the Redeemer Shrine and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), the governing body of Brazilian football reported in a statement.

“At 7:30 p.m. local time (22:30 GMT) the monument was illuminated with the colors green and yellow in allusion to the three-time champion with the Brazilian team in 1958, 1962 and 1970, idol of Santos, author of 1,282 goals and King of Soccer, among many other titles,” the CBF stated in its statement.

According to the entity, the joint tribute is part of a campaign to perpetuate the history and legacy “of the greatest footballer of all time.”

Pelé died on December 29, 2022 from multiple organ failure as a result of the progression of colon cancer.

The CBF recalled that it has also sponsored special illuminations of Christ the Redeemer to remember other special moments, such as the 30 years since the 1994 world title was won and the election of Brazil as the host of the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
