Claudia Sheinbaum says Mexico will remain “impartial” on the post-electoral conflict in Venezuela

MEXICO CITY.— This Tuesday morning, during its usual press conference, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardoassured that his Government will maintain a “impartial” stance about the Venezuela post-election crisisdifferent from the one adopted Colombia and Brazilalthough it continues without recognizing victory of Nicolás Maduro Moros.

“From now on, we are going to remain, let’s say, impartial in the face of this. So Colombia has a position, Brazil has a position, the United States has its own position, and our position is the constitutional one, the self-determination of peoples“said the president.

This is the first time that Claudia Sheinbaum has spoken about the Venezuelan elections after assuming office as president of Mexico on October 1.

The president responded to questions from a journalist about the statements of the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petrowho after attending the investiture of Sheinbaum Pardo pointed out that Mexico would “step away from the discussion” about Venezuela, which began with Brazil and Colombia.

Make electoral records transparent

The former Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) spoke about Venezuela on August 1 with Petro and the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, agreeing that they should make the electoral records transparent on July 28.

But, although he did not expressly recognize the re-election of President Nicolás Maduro, proclaimed by the National Electoral Council (CNE), Claudia Sheinbaum did not detail her position when arguing that the Constitution prohibits intervention in foreign affairs.

“We have, through the Constitution, a very clear definition of foreign policy, which is the self-determination of the people, at first there was a first call from the three countries, after the election of Venezuela, for the results of the election,” he said.

The opponent Edmundo González Urrutiawhom countries like the United States recognize as the winner of the July 28 elections, announced in Spain, where he has been exiled since September, that on January 10 will return to Venezuela to take office as president, on the constituent date scheduled for the inauguration.
