This Wednesday, October 23, within the framework of the international disaster reduction month, the 8th seismic evacuation drill was held in the state of Táchira. The director of Civil Protection Táchira, Yesnardo Canal, highlighted the importance of seismic preventive culture in the state, due to its location in a high seismic risk area.
According to the funvisis seismic scale, Táchira is at level 5 between 0 to 7, which generates a history of significant earthquakes and earthquakes that have caused structural collapses and human losses. Canal stressed that the Civil Protection work policy focuses on the education and preparation of the population to face seismic events. “It is crucial that all Tachirans know how to act when faced with the release of energy or a seismic event,” he stated.
The Boconó fault and the Uribante and Eslacante subfaults could affect Táchira
The state of Táchira is crossed by the main Boconó fault and two subfaults, Uribante to the south and Escalante to the north, which can generate energy releases. In this context, two drills have been planned to improve emergency response capacity.
The first drill was carried out in a private clinical center in San Cristóbal, where the collapse of a structure and the evacuation of two trapped citizens was simulated. The second drill was carried out in the El Pueblito sector of the Capacho Libertad municipality, where the collapse of several homes due to a mass movement was recreated, with the intervention of rescue teams to save trapped people.
Participation of public and private organizations and institutions
For several weeks, Táchira Civil Protection officials have carried out personalized training and training in different institutions. This was so that they could be aware of and participate in the seismic evacuation drill that took place this Wednesday.
While officials began the drill in the upper part of San Cristóbal, the preventive evacuation alarm sounded in several institutions to carry out the procedure. Canal, expressed that this type of activities not only prepares officials to be able to respond to any eventuality, but also citizens participate and learn about the actions they should take.
