The French multinational Nexans chose Morocco this year to organize the fourth edition of its “ Climate day “. The company specializes in the design and manufacturing of cables. Its forum is dedicated to solutions that should make it possible to meet climate challenges. This year’s theme: sustainable electrification, an opportunity for Africa.

From our correspondent in Morocco,

The company pulled out all the stops, privatizing the magnificent Chellah gardens and setting up stands to publicize its latest innovations. “ What I suggest is to look around you. Whenever you have a machine, transformer or cell that appears blue, try clicking the button right there », we suggest to visitors.

Virtual reality for the training of technicians, to ensure quality maintenance. It was this stand that caught the eye of Lenzéni Coulibaly, consultant for the Ivorian Electricity Company. “ I was invited by Nexans to discover all their innovations in preventing incidents and malfunctions », he explains. To do this, they have monitoring systems, solutions that make the electricity network more sustainable. A boon for companies like the Ivorian company which has “ equipment lifespan issues “. In particular, overconsumption is the cause. “ A transformer has a power, has a load that it must not exceed, but when you are overloaded with monitoring, you can cut off before the incident and thus increase the lifespan », explains Lenzéni Coulibaly.

Fewer incidents and loss of equipment which should logically make it possible to reduce the carbon footprint of the sector, according to this consultant. “If it is necessary to remanufacture cables, remanufacture transformers, re-consume oils, it is against the environment, and even, it pollutes and produces waste “, he points out.

A competitive sector

Already present at Morocco and in Ivory Coastthis forum is an opportunity for the French company Nexans to try to attract potential new customers on the continent, thanks to its equipment based on solar energy. « I find that Nexans also develops solar energy and indeed, we can involve them in the competition of companies that can effectively provide solutions to the Comoros », Estimates Mohamed Djounaid, general director of the Comoros National Electricity Company (SONADEC).

In this market, there is indeed competition, according to Mohamed Djounaid. “ It’s not just Nexans, but still, Nexans has its place in terms of quality. And perhaps in terms of cost, that’s where there will be a difference. We’ll see. The Chinese are also there and are adapting », he highlights.

Nothing to worry about the CEO of Nexans, Christopher Guérin, who insists on the African roots of his company: “ In Morocco for 77 years. More than 10 years ago, we started a new factory in Ivory Coast. Since the 1960s we have been in Ghana. Also at Senegal. So, we have been present in Africa for a very long time. But Morocco is our development platform. » The group plans to strengthen its presence in the Kingdom with a third factory. Its commissioning is planned for 2028.
