Such groups are expected to be formed in the near future – they will unite representatives of society from various fields and will advise the mayor and the municipal administration when considering issues relevant to the city.
The advisory working groups will replace the public councils that functioned under the municipal council until now.
Earlier this week, former and current representatives of the canceled Klaipėda Culture and Art Council stated that this way the community’s resources and accumulated experience are being denied, and the trust between the cultural community and the government is being destroyed.
In turn, the municipality claims that after the change in the local self-government law and the expansion of the mayor’s powers and functions, the need to change the nature of the activity of public councils has also increased.
“The aim of these changes is to involve the public in considering issues relevant to the city community and to ensure greater transparency at the same time. It is difficult to understand the resistance of some people to changes, because the opportunities to participate, make suggestions, discuss and work together towards the best solutions do not decrease, simply with the arrival of a new government, even more efficient and transparent forms of activity are sought”, said Klaipėda Mayor Arvydas Vaitkus.
“We must look ahead and make the right decisions for everyone, not for individual groups. Communication with experts in all fields, be it culture, art or sport, has always been and always will be, we will always listen to those who care about the city, whether they are members of advisory groups or not,” he added.
Regulations governing the activities of advisory groups are currently being prepared. In the near future, it is planned to form groups that will be involved in the processes of consideration of culture, sports, academic, maritime community, seniors, national communities, relevant topics for business, issues of commemoration of famous people, historical dates.
