This came during the visit of the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, to the Lebanese capital, Beirut, which lasts one day during which he meets with Lebanese leaders.

During his visit to Beirut, Aboul Gheit met with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, the Prime Minister of the Lebanese Caretaker Government, Najib Mikati, and the Commander of the Lebanese Army, General Joseph Khalil Aoun.

According to a statement by the Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Aboul Gheit’s visit to Beirut aims to consult with Lebanese leaders on ways to deal with the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon, which requires minimum Lebanese understandings.

Ambassador Hossam Zaki added that the visit of the Secretary-General of the Arab League also aims to encourage reaching understandings regarding the presidential vacancy issue, as it is “a matter that has become an important priority” to complete the country’s constitutional leadership in order to enable it to face the major challenges that Lebanon is going through.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League also aims, through his visit to Beirut, to learn about the Lebanese position regarding the humanitarian and relief situation to support those displaced as a result of the aggression, especially in light of the upcoming Paris meeting on the 24th of this month, in which the Arab League was invited to participate.

On Saturday, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States stressed that the Government of Lebanon is the only one entrusted with negotiating on behalf of the country in order to reach an immediate ceasefire and complete and undiminished implementation of Resolution 1701.

Aboul Gheit stressed that the Arab League’s position is clear in this regard and that all of its decisions emphasize Lebanon’s full sovereignty in making its fateful decisions.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League announced his full support for the position expressed by Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, which was to reject the Iranian statement about Tehran’s readiness to negotiate with France to implement Resolution 1701.

Aboul Gheit said, “There is no place for imposing guardianship by this or that party, or exerting pressure, or violating Lebanese sovereignty. We fully stand with Lebanon in this matter, and talk about supporting Lebanese sovereignty should not be just empty words, but rather it should be supported by positions.” Especially true in this difficult circumstance, and the suffering of the Lebanese is not just a negotiating card in the hands of any party.”
