The Indonesian rock climbing team once again recorded brilliant achievements at the IFSC 4 Speed Madrid event by bringing home 1 gold medal and 2 bronze medals.

Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi won the gold medal in the women’s speed event with a time of 6.49 seconds, beating her three opponents in the final, including Rajiah Salsabillah, who finished in third place and won bronze with a time of 9.65 seconds.

Meanwhile, Veddriq Leonardo won another bronze medal in the men’s speed event with a time of 5.11 seconds, behind Long Jianguo from China and Amir Maimuratov from Kazakhstan who finished first and second.

The IFSC 4 Speed Madrid 2024 competition is the first competition to use a new format with 4 lanes, with 4 athletes competing simultaneously.

According to the Head of the Competition Division of the Central Board of the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (PP FPTI) Agung Karokaro, in the qualifying round, each athlete is required to climb on all routes (Lane AD).

From the qualifying results, the 16 fastest athletes advanced to the quarter-finals, with the 8 fastest athletes immediately qualifying, while the other 8 athletes fought in the elimination round which was contested by athletes who finished in positions 9-24 fastest in the qualifying round.

In the quarter-finals, the 16 athletes were divided into 4 groups, with 4 athletes in each group. The 16 athletes competed for the two fastest positions from each group and then competed for the 8 fastest positions to qualify for the semi-finals.

In the semifinal round, the 8 athletes were divided into two groups, with 4 athletes each. The 8 athletes will compete for the two fastest positions from each group to compete for the 4 fastest positions to qualify for the final round.

In the final round, the 4 athletes will compete in 4 lanes at once to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Agung also provided information that the competition in Madrid was also a trial event for speed relay events with a format of 2 athletes against 2 athletes, unlike the usual speed relay which uses a format of 3 athletes against 3 athletes.

Furthermore, Agung said that the new competition format for individual speed numbers, both men’s and women’s, would also be tested further at the 2025 World Games which will be held in Chengdu, China in 2025.

Meanwhile, PP FPTI General Secretary Pristiawan Buntoro expressed his appreciation and reminded that competition for speed numbers with a new format will make competition even fiercer in international competitions.

“Of course we are very grateful and appreciate the positive achievements achieved by the best sons and daughters of this nation. “But remember with this new format (using 4 lanes), athletes must really maintain their physical and mental condition because athletes have to undergo more intense matches in one competition, so they need to be in prime condition and have a stable mental condition.” said Pristiawan in his statement, Monday (21/10).
