– I have confidence that the people we have on post there will do what is best for their area, says the Prime Minister to NTB.

Støre met the press on Monday evening after speaking at the YS conference in Oslo.

While the Labor Party/Sp government has profiled itself as a champion of settlement in the districts, several high schools in the interior are set to be closed down by a county council led by the Labor Party.

Støre points out that it is the county municipalities that manage the upper secondary schools.

– We respect that those who are school owners have the best overview. They take this very seriously and are responsible for making the decisions. Then we will contribute to a municipal economy that puts them in the best possible position to take that responsibility.

Don’t want to interfere with the party

The Prime Minister warns against taking responsibility sharing seriously.

– Then we change some of the way we make good decisions, which over time has proven to be a wise arrangement for Norway, he says.

Several Storting politicians in the Center Party have come out and asked the central Labor Party to put pressure on their politicians in the interior to get them to turn around.

Støre also rejects this.

– They must make assessments over time to ensure the best offer we can give our children, today and in the years to come, he says.

– Good atmosphere in the government

Støre started on Monday by stepping out and distancing himself from statements that his own Minister of Justice, Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp), has made in the case.

She has previously compared the Labor Party’s cooperation with the Conservative Party and MDG in the interior as “prostitution”.

Støre denies that there is a bad atmosphere in the government as a result of the heated debate.

– The government is in a good mood. We work on many issues and manage to handle them in a good way and also deliver important, good issues for the country. And then there is a great deal of involvement in school-related matters. I think that applies to both parents, pupils and teachers, he says.

Although Støre, as prime minister, will not intervene, he understands that many are pointing the finger at the government.

– It is always the case that when challenges arise in society, people look to the government. We have experienced that with electricity prices, inflation and the pandemic. It is part of the way democracy is. Then the government must reply that we understand that. We follow these matters. But we are also aware of the division of responsibilities that exists in our society, he says.
