Caracas, Oct 20 (EFE).- Hundreds of anti-Chavistas participated this Sunday in protests, which took place in several countries, to ask the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) to intercede for the children detained in Venezuela after the presidential elections of July 28.
The opposition party Vente Venezuela (VV), led by former deputy María Corina Machado, indicated in a press release that the demonstrations took place in 60 cities, in countries such as the United States, Spain, Sweden, Israel, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium and the Netherlands.
“This action seeks to draw the attention of Unicef, urging this international entity, in charge of the protection of children at a global level, to take stronger measures in defense of the rights of these minors,” the letter reads.
Although the non-governmental organization Penal Forum – which leads the defense of those considered political prisoners in Venezuela – says in its latest report that there are 68 minors detained, VV assures that a total of 70 children remain today “unjustly detained by the regime of (the President) Nicolás Maduro.
«Since July 28 – when the electoral body proclaimed the controversial re-election of Maduro – the Venezuelan regime has intensified a wave of persecution and repression, which has resulted in multiple violations of human rights. Minors have not been immune to this critical situation,” the press release continues.
The party hopes that Unicef ”demands the immediate release” of these minors, some of whom have been charged with crimes such as terrorism, according to information released by non-governmental organizations.
