Viktor Gyökeres is the goalscorer in the Champions League for the second time.

The Swede was responsible for a solo performance until 2-0 against Sturm Graz – and was named player of the match.

– I just tried to go straight for the goal, says Gyökeres in Viaplay’s broadcast.

On September 17, he struck with a goal in his Champions League debut against Lille.

After leaving the field goalless against PSV earlier in October, it was time again.

In the Swede’s third Champions League match of his career, he took the ball from a Sturm Graz defender.

The 26-year-old showed his composure as he feinted past the goalkeeper and rolled in the 2-0 goal in Austria.

– I tried to get a good angle to shoot. I felt that the best thing to do was to wait a bit and get the goalkeeper down and then set it, he says in Viaplay’s broadcast.

Played until 1–0

The striker also acted as a forward in the match. Although it may not have been intentional from the 26-year-old.

The Swede got a great position until 1–0 but missed and only touched the ball.

It landed instead with Nuno Santos, who managed the situation.

The striker was then named player of the match by Uefa.

Sporting Lisbon won the match 2-0 and after Tuesday night is in third place in the new Champions League format.

It was also Swedish between Juventus and Stuttgart when left-back Jonas Rouhi was substituted in the 90th minute.

Two minutes later, Stuttgart decided with the only goal of the match from El Bilal Touré.

A less successful entry from the Swede.

Goal-Scoring Brilliance: Gyökeres Lights Up Champions League

Published 2024-10-22 22.59

Ah, Viktor Gyökeres, the man, the myth, the goalscorer! Our very own Swedish sensation has shown he’s not just a pretty face in the Champions League. Scoring for the second time in this prestigious tournament, Gyökeres was absolutely pivotal in Sporting Lisbon’s 2-0 victory over Sturm Graz. Now, I don’t know about you, but it sounds like he’s got a thing for big nights out on the football field.

From Debut to Dominance

Let’s rewind a bit to September 17, when Gyökeres made his Champions League debut against Lille. His name made its mark on the score sheet, leaving defenders scrambling and fans cheering. Then he had to face PSV, where his name was notably absent from the score sheet. But every hero has their off days, right? After all, if Cristiano Ronaldo can forget where the goal is for, what is it, two minutes? So can Gyökeres!

Player of the Match

Fast forward to last night, and Viktor was at it again! With more agility than a cat in a sock factory, he seized the opportunity, robbing a Sturm Graz defender like a cheeky kid at a candy store. He then executed a delightful feint past the keeper to settle the ball into the net, as cool as a cucumber in a freezer. “I just tried to go straight for the goal,” he said post-match. That’s one hell of a strategy, Viktor! I was trying to go straight for the cookie jar last night but ended up with a biscuit. Let’s call it the “Gyökeres method.”

Almost a Goal Before the Goal

Now, there was a moment before the lead-up to that spicy goal when our Swedish stud almost put the team on the scoreboard—almost being the operative word. He had a stellar position but, well, let’s say he only gave the ball an enthusiastic high-five before Nuno Santos swooped in and seized the opportunity instead. But hey, he was named ‘Player of the Match’ by UEFA! So, what do you know? Ghosting the goal but still stealing the show—a true masterclass in forward play!

Sporting’s Victory and the Swedish Saga

With this impressive win, Sporting Lisbon secured their position in third place in the revamped Champions League standings, and all thanks to the touch of Gyökeres! Meanwhile, across the Champions League battleground, another Swede, Jonas Rouhi, made a more subtle entrance as he was subbed in for Stuttgart and could only watch as his side conceded the match-winning goal shortly afterward. Poor lad—talk about being thrown into the deep end and immediately sinking! Maybe that’s what they mean by “substitutes don’t deliver.”

Conclusion

All in all, Viktor Gyökeres is taking the Champions League by storm—or at least, strolling handsomely through it in a designer suit while flaunting spectacular footwork. Keep your eyes peeled; with his pace and poise, this could just be the beginning of a magnificent football saga. Who knew a Swede could take the pitch by such storm? I mean, apart from ABBA. But that’s a different genre entirely!
