Hurricane Oscar made its landfall this Sunday in eastern Cubarecording sustained winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour, according to the report from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The agency points out that according to satellite images and radar data, the category 1 hurricane made landfall in the Cuban province of Guantánamo, near the city of Baracoa.

In response to this situation, the Government of Cuba has decided to suspend administrative and educational activities in the country from Monday to Wednesday of next week.

Likewise, it has been reported that essential services for the population will continue to operate.

Oscar became a Category 1 hurricane this Saturday afternoon, after having originated earlier as the fifteenth storm of the current cyclone season.

The Forecast Center of the Cuban Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) warned that an increase in rains and thunderstorms, as well as in the intensity of winds, is anticipated in the eastern provinces of the island. In addition, he indicated that strong storm surges are expected north of Guantánamo, Holguín and Las Tunas, along with possible coastal flooding.
