The Minister of Higher Education responds to the demands of medical students

The Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, Abdellatif Mirawi, said today, Monday, October 21, 2024, in the House of Representatives, that the settlement file for the striking medical students “is still open,” noting that “the file of the Pharmacy Department students who enrolled in the study has been settled.”

While answering oral questions about the demands file of striking medical students, during the weekly oral question session, Mirawi explained that there are four outstanding points in this file, related to the duration of training, disciplinary penalties, student offices, and exam programming.

In this regard, the Minister stressed that reducing the duration of study in the faculties of medicine and pharmacy to six years “does not harm the quality of training,” noting that the Ministry proposed to the striking students to add three months of training, renewable four times (representing a seventh year) for those who wish to do so.

Regarding disciplinary penalties, Mirawi said that the Ministry is ready to implement what was agreed upon with regard to pharmacy students, with medical students. He also pointed out that “all the student offices that exist today are illegal, and are supposed to be dedicated to parallel activities,” pointing out that the Ministry proposed “ A six-month deadline for these offices to implement the law (…).”

The Minister reviewed the efforts and initiatives undertaken by the government to resolve the issue of striking students, noting that last June it presented a comprehensive offer responding to their demands, “which included clear answers to the questions raised by the students and provided realistic solutions to the constraints that were identified, and identified all necessary measures and procedures to Ensuring the implementation of the government’s obligations in this regard.”

He stated that the parliamentary teams, majority and opposition, intervened last July and undertook several mediation initiatives in an attempt to persuade students to return to school and save the university year, pointing out that in response to this parliamentary mediation, exceptional courses were programmed to enable students to complete their exams and continue their studies, This concerns the September 5th session related to the first semester, and the October 7th session related to the second semester.

He also mentioned in this regard the intervention of the Kingdom Brokerage Foundation, “which opened the file for students in colleges of medicine and pharmacy in early September and is still working on it,” stressing that in support of this initiative, “the ministry provided all explanations and checks related to the proposed government offer and informed the Kingdom Brokerage of its answers to questions.” Students on all points of the demand file, specifying the procedural steps taken by the administration in order to activate the government proposal.”
