Tel Aviv. Hezbollah fired a barrage of artillery shells into central Israel on Tuesday, prompting air raid sirens to sound in the country’s most populous region but causing no casualties or material damage.

According to the Israeli military, five missiles were fired from Lebanon toward Israel, most of which were intercepted by the country’s missile defense system. One of them fell in a sparsely populated area.

In Israel’s attack on Lebanon

The incident came as Israel stepped up attacks in Lebanon on a financial institution run by the political paramilitary group Hezbollah and the United States urged the Gaza Strip to resume ceasefire talks following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to eliminate Hamas and free dozens of hostages still held by the insurgent group. Hamas insists it will release the prisoners only on condition of a permanent ceasefire, complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the enclave and the release of Palestinian prisoners.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led rebels blew up a security fence and attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking another 250 hostages. The Israeli offensive has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the local health department, whose statistics do not distinguish between civilian casualties and combatants. The war destroyed large areas of the Las Vegas Strip and displaced approximately 90% of the 2.3 million residents.
