Fethullah Gulen Dies in US Aged 83″/>
Turkish Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara said was behind a failed coup in 2016, has died in the United States (US) where he lived. That’s according to Turkish media and websites linked to Gulen. He is 83 years old.
Herkul, a website that publishes Gulen’s sermons, said on its X account on Monday (21/10) that Gulen had died on Sunday (19/10) evening at the hospital where he was being treated.
Gulen built Hizmet, a powerful Islamist movement in Turkey and beyond, but spent his final years accused of orchestrating a coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a charge he denies.
He was once an ally of Erdogan, but they fell out in spectacular fashion.
Erdogan holds him responsible for the coup when rogue soldiers took control of fighter planes, tanks and helicopters.
About 250 people died in the attempt to seize power.
