The “Eagle’s nest” in Sauda created strong reactions – now the cabin is getting a new name

– I myself visited Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest as a tourist many years ago. For me, the choice is completely wrong. I question whether it is due to a lack of historical knowledge, says manager Aslaug Astad of Sauda sogelag to Dagbladet’s Stock Exchange.

For the municipality, it was supposed to be good news about the new day trip cabin, but the name instead led to a heated debate in the local community. The name Ørneredet was met with major protests, the newspaper writes.

– We have chosen to listen to the people and have started work on changing the name, says Christer Klementsen, head of the day trip cabin project in the municipality, to the local newspaper Ry county according to Haugesund’s newspaper.

“The eagle’s nest” is idyllically located on Giljafjell next to Rødstjødna and the Sauda golf course in Saudasjøen, says Rogaland county council on its websites.

Kehlsteinhaus, known as the Eagle’s Nest, was Adolf Hitler’s summer residence and representative residence in Berchtesgaden in southern Germany. It is located 1,834 meters above sea level.

The name is also known through the Norwegian title of Alistair MacLean’s book “Where Eagles Dare” and the film of the same name, in Norwegian “Orneredet” in 1968.

– Calling the cabin the Eagle’s Nest is incomprehensible and completely without history. (…) Eagle’s nest is such a burdensome word and gives such bad associations that it should not be used on a cabin in Sauda, writes Aslaug Astad in a letter to the reader together with Margoth Saundsbø from Sauda Mållag.

The municipality must now publish proposals for a new cabin name in the local newspaper before the matter is followed up politically. In the meantime, the municipality must replace 15 signs and update all profiling material.
