ALMOST 32 thousand people took to the streets in the Belgian capital on Sunday (20/10) demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Israel hits Hamas targets in Gaza after shells fired from the strip”>Gaza Strip and Lebanon. That’s according to the local police.

At the large march in Brussels, demonstrators called on the Belgian government to push for a full international military embargo against Israel. The event was organized by a coalition of civil society organizations, the Belgian News Agency reported.

Vrede’s Ludo De Brabander, one of the organizers, told VRT that while attention is on the European Union, Belgium can still take responsibility or take the lead on a particular issue.

“Belgium still has not recognized Palestine as a state, as Spain and Ireland have done,” he added.

Israel continues to launch brutal attacks on Gaza following cross-border attacks by the Palestinian Hamas group last October, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.

More than 42,000 people, mostly women and children, have since been killed, and nearly 99,800 others injured, according to local health authorities.

Israel has also stepped up massive air strikes on Lebanon since last month to fight Hezbollah, killing more than 1,500 people and displacing more than 1.34 million others.

Cross-border warfare between the two sides has continued since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. (Ant/Z-2)
