A day after the League’s demonstration in support of him in the Open Arms case, Matteo Salvini returned to talk about the management of migratory flows and to reply to the judges who are today asking for a sentence against him. “Solving the problem of migrants is what I did. I promised it to the Italians: to fight smugglers and human traffickers, because, I remind the Italians, that each trip on small boats and boats costs around 5 thousand dollars, and the traffickers use that money to buy weapons and drugs”, declared the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in an interview with Tg1. The Northern League leader claimed responsibility for the choices made in the past and highlighted that, in the event of a conviction, the problem would not be his, “but for Italy because from the next day smugglers and traffickers would know where to go”.
This is an equally valid point for the agreement with Albania. “If we say that we cannot expel anyone, if any of these 12 committed a crime tomorrow, robbed, raped or killed someone, who would pay the consequences? That magistrate who brought them back to Italy?”, he asked. “There are left-wing governments in Europe, I’m thinking of Spain, Germany, Denmark, Great Britain, who are closing their borders and suspending Schengen because human trafficking is a problem at continental level, so if the former Minister of the Interior who blocked the landings risks prison, those magistrates take a great responsibility”, continued Salvini. Then, pointing the finger at those magistrates who espouse a left-wing political line, he added: “They use the court as a social centre.”
