Indonesia Makes Its Mark: Foreign Minister Sugiono Heads to BRICS Summit!

Jakarta – In a dazzling twist of international intrigue, Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, is set to strut his diplomatic stuff at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24. You heard that right – Indonesia is not just doing its own thing, but is stepping onto the global stage like a contestant on a reality show desperate for the public’s vote.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno casually dropped the news like a hot potato, confirming that Sugiono will proudly represent Indonesia at the summit. “Yes, he has a conference if I’m not mistaken,” Arif quipped, putting the charm of a captivating stand-up comic and the precision of a political scientist into one impressive soundbite.

And just to spice things up, Minister Sugiono will be accompanied by the ever-diligent Tri Tharyat, the Director General of Multilateral Cooperation. Because, let’s face it, you can’t just have one minister on a diplomatic mission. It’s like going to a first date without telling your mate you need a plus one. A recipe for awkwardness!

Now, while the Indonesian foreign policy machinery gears up, don’t forget about Retno Marsudi, the previous maestro of foreign affairs. Oh yes, she has a little nugget of wisdom to share with us; she mentioned that the representatives heading to the BRICS Summit were, in fact, to be decided by none other than President Prabowo Subianto. I mean, “Retno, you’re not the boss anymore,” the voice of the current leadership seems to echo. Awkward!

What’s that? You thought President Prabowo was going to make an appearance at the summit? Not so fast! He’s just stepped into the role of President alongside Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and apparently, he’s too busy dealing with the furniture arrangement in the government transition office to jet off to Kazan. Understandable! Priorities first, after all.

But what about Indonesia joining BRICS, you ask? Well, hold on to your diplomatic hats! Retno shared that while they previously received an invitation to BRICS last summer at the summit in Johannesburg, the final call on whether to join this elite club will depend on the shiny economic benefits it presents. Because let’s be real – joining an economic bloc on a whim without weighing the pros and cons would be like buying a sports car on a whim. You may look fabulous, but that insurance premium might break you!

So there you have it! Indonesia’s entry into BRICS hinges on good ol’ economic sense, which in this day and age seems just as puzzling as fitting a square peg in a round hole. As the summit approaches, all eyes will be on Minister Sugiono and his team to see if they can charm their way into BRICS and bring home some juicy benefits for the nation. After all, who wouldn’t want to be part of a club that’s got “bricks” in its name? It screams strong foundation – or at least, a great metaphor for building alliances!

Reported by Antara, Indonesian Foreign Minister for the 2014-2024 period Retno Marsudi stated that Indonesia’s representatives to attend the BRICS Summit would be determined by President Prabowo Subianto.

“The BRICS plan will have a special envoy from President Subianto present,” said Retno when giving a statement on the sidelines of the 45th ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos, Friday (11/10).

Prabowo should have been invited to attend the BRICS Summit, but Prabowo failed to attend because of the need to handle the government transition after being inaugurated as President of the Republic of Indonesia with Gibran Rakabuming Raka as Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia on October 20.

Apart from that, Indonesia’s decision to join BRICS rests with the Prabowo government. “But we continue to provide input to the president-elect regarding BRICS issues,” said Retno on September 5.

At that time, Retno admitted that she had communicated with Prabowo Subianto regarding BRICS when they were recently announced as the winners of the 2024 presidential election.

Retno said that Indonesia itself previously received an invitation to join BRICS when the 15th BRICS Summit was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 22 to 24 August 2023.

However, Indonesia’s decision to become a member of BRICS depends on an assessment of the economic benefits gained from joining the economic bloc.
