The Municipality agrees on progress on the new Police Station

“We are here, dedicated to fighting crime. The Police is moving into a new era”, emphasized the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, speaking about the establishment of the new Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, which started its operation yesterday. While, he went on to say: “We are here focused on our goal of reducing everyday crime and being very close to citizens and at the same time dealing strong blows against hard and serious crime.”

From Patras where he is visiting, the Minister of Citizen Protection, accompanied by the Inspector General of the Police of Southern Greece, Lieutenant General Georgios Michalopoulos, in a meeting with all the Senior Officers of Western Greece, Department Commanders, Directors and Heads of Services noted that with the creation of the of the new Directorate “Greece is moving into a new era in the fight against crime and we will thus be able to effectively and decisively deal a further strong blow to thugs, murderers, smugglers, extortionists and all those who, with criminal groups, systematically violate the social contract…. now even more decisively, we will deliver key blows to organized crime, which on the one hand affects the Republic itself, affects human lives, but also affects the economy because it tries to penetrate the official economy through gray or black methods”, he concluded .

He then pointed out that social policing issues are a priority on the ministry’s agenda, which has the political responsibility, and more emphasis will be placed on this field. He expressed, as he said, his personal anxiety about the issue of juvenile delinquency, pointing out that “the issue of juvenile violence is not a police issue, but a deeply serious social issue that primarily concerns the family, the school, our society in total. We must all work together to convey to our children the spirit of social coexistence and peace, the spirit of democracy and the social contract, so as to minimize these incidents,” he said. He also referred to the actions developed by the police with police patrols in squares and places where minors gather, the operation of the five-digit telephone line 10201, but also the activation, in a few days, of the safe youth application, which, as he said, is the panic button for minors, and the police will immediately intervene when notified.

In addition, Michalis Chrysochoidis stated that by the end of the year, the implementation of new stricter legislation for the owners of knives, which will be included in dangerous weapons, will be ready, referring in general to the tightening of the relevant legal framework.

“By the end of the year we will have introduced new legislation, which we presented to the Cabinet, to toughen the penalties for the owners of knives, pocket knives, killer knives in general by classifying dangerous knives as dangerous weapons and banning them from being in circulation. Also, the penalties for gun ownership and carrying and use of guns are greatly increased, so that this also works as a deterrent,” he said characteristically.

He also announced the reinforcement of Achaia with policemen, as her staff, she pointed out, took on a significant load in policing the islands last summer, with very good results. In particular, he stated that “we will strengthen Achaia in the upcoming transfers because it needs it, because it is a large region with economic development and Ilia which also needs staff and we will be present every day, so that there is an answer for every need”.

Regarding the new Police Headquarters of Patras he said that the procedures are proceeding, with the agreement of the Municipality of Patreon. The municipal authority, as Mr. Chrysochoidis said, has requested the execution of local traffic management projects, for which various possible sources of funding are being explored, “so that the operation of the police station and the operation of the city in general can be coordinated with each other”, he noted .
