Update on the situation of the National Electrical System in Cuba

The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Cuba reported this Friday on the progress in the recovery of the National Electric System (SEN) after the generalized disconnection that affected the entire country due to a breakdown at the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant (CTE).

According to the latest report from the ministry, they had been restored microsystems in all provinces, except Artemisa, and work was being done on synchronizing the thermoelectric plants to the main system.

At the CTE Santa Cruz, electrical voltage had already been established, and unit #1 was in the start-up process.

On the other hand, at the CTE Mariel, three units were ready to come into operation once the power supply is recovered in that area. Likewise, it was reported that the engines of the floating plant in Santiago de Cuba and those in Moa are already operational, and work continues at the Rente CTE to put its two units into operation.

Vicente de la O Levy, Minister of Energy and Mines, confirmed that the recovery process is progressing as planned, and that a defined strategy is being followed to avoid new system outages.

Progress in the recovery of thermoelectric plants and distributed generation

The CTE Antonio Guiteras is expected to generate electricity again this Saturday, after solving the problems in its automatic systems and carrying out maintenance work during the 24 to 30 hours that the plant will be out of service.

The blackout has seriously affected the population, as many families have been left without electricity to cook or access basic services. In addition, the disconnection of Guiteras also caused a significant drop in internet traffic in the country, as reported by the Internet observatory NetBlocks.

Currently, microsystems are being created with distributed generation groups in the provinces, prioritizing those close to thermoelectric plants to stabilize the system. Although an exact date has not been given for the complete restoration of service, the authorities assure that they are working intensely to achieve reconnection in the shortest possible time.

The authorities have also reported that the CUPET company is distributing the fuel necessary to maintain generation in the generator sets distributed in the country, thus guaranteeing that the SEN recovery process can continue.
