INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Aidan O’Connell suffered a thumb injury in the first quarter of the Las Vegas Raiders‘ 20-15 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. .

O’Connell was injured when his right hand hit Rams safety Cam Cole’s hand on a long pass. In addition, intentional passes during the game are also penalized.

“It’s very unfortunate,” he said. “I was really looking forward to today and this opportunity, so to be interrupted like this is definitely difficult.”

O’Connell stayed on for the final drive of the series, completing a short pass to wide receiver DJ Turner on third-and-21, but Purdue’s sophomore quarterback said his thumb was numb .

After the game, O’Connell had his thumb in a splint, covered with black tape. The 26-year-old said the extent of the injury won’t be known until they return to Las Vegas for further testing, “but (I’m) hoping for good news,” adding that he suffered a similar injury in school .

Gardner Minshew replaces O’Connell for the third series in Las Vegas. Minshew started the season as the starting quarterback but was replaced by O’Connell this month due to turnover issues. For sixth-year NFL veteran Minshew, those struggles continue.

Minshew threw three interceptions and lost a fumble but returned it for a touchdown late in the first half. His first two interceptions led to two touchdowns for the Rams, the last of which came with 1:18 left in the game as Minshew tried to lead the drive.
