Balochistan: Empowerment of Environment Department and Magistrate to prevent pollution

The provincial cabinet of Balochistan has given the powers of magistrate to the department of environment to prevent the factors that cause environmental pollution and to take action against them.

This decision was made in the meeting of the caretaker provincial cabinet held under the chairmanship of Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Ali Mardan Khan Domki, who decided to approve the assignment of magistrate powers to the concerned department under the sub-clause of section 32 of the Balochistan Environmental Protection Act 2012. went

Mohammad Khan, technical director of the Environmental Protection Agency of the Department of Environment, said: ‘We had difficulties in stopping the work against the environment because first we had to inform the police and the deputy commissioner to provide force and then take action. could have done.’

Mohammad Khan told Independent Urdu: ‘With the authority of the magistrate, we can now take action against anyone, even register a challan or a case. Earlier we had to apply to the police, go to the police station, due to which the matter was delayed.’

He said that the environment department currently monitors the factors causing environmental pollution in the city for which the teams go and inspect. If there is any violation, then due to lack of this authority, we were facing difficulties in stopping them and registering cases, issuing challans.

According to Mohammad Khan: ‘There are many issues in the city that are causing environmental pollution, including some warehouses, factories and crushing plants, which have not been effectively dealt with due to lack of powers to take action. Now, with this option, it will be possible to stop them in a better way.

He said: ‘Recently we had to take action against scrap warehouses on Raisani Road, for which we had to first inform the magistrate, then apply to the police for force, but then they did it again. had started For which again we had to go to the DC and get a magistrate and then get a police force to seal the re-opened godowns, if the magistrate had powers we could have taken action at that time.’

A few years ago, two-stroke rickshaws and smoldering old buses were cracked down on to curb pollution in Quetta, and some roads in the city were made single-way.

Regarding environmental pollution, Mohammad Khan said that the city currently has less pollution problems, but due to the construction of highways in the city for a long time, dust pollution has increased.

Department of Environment Balochistan was implemented under Environment Protection Act 2012. It was passed by the Balochistan Assembly on 24 December 2012, which was implemented in 2013 after the assent of the Governor.
