The move by the United States to threaten Israel regarding alleged obstruction of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, Palestine, is seen as just a warning. This does not mean a change in US attitude.

International Relations Lecturer at the University of Indonesia, Broto Wardoyo, said that the US statement that it would cut weapons supplies was nothing more than a warning. Nor should it be interpreted as a turnaround.

“America is only trying to comply with the rules they have made themselves, but they will not just give up aid (to Israel). This is just a kind of warning to Israel to show its argument for blocking humanitarian aid,” said Broto when contacted, Thursday (17/10).

“If there is a security argument from Israel, I don’t think there will be any problems for the United States,” he added.

The warning from the US, continued Broto, is actually only related to domestic legal provisions which do not allow support, including weapons, for activities that threaten humanity.

The reason is, at the same time the US also deployed troops and an anti-missile defense system (THAAD) to help Israel.

“So it cannot be said that America will withdraw. Because at the same time America was deploying anti-missiles (to Israel). From there we cannot just accept that the United States changed its attitude,” he said. (Z-2)
