A group of women and girls were recently robbed by people claiming to work in the transportation sector using applications in the city of Casablanca, which opened the discussion again about the availability of safety and security conditions while using this type of transportation, which is still illegal in Morocco.

This issue raised the ire of actors in the transportation sector using smart applications, who demanded the necessity of regulating the field to avoid such accidents.

In this context, Samir Farabi, Secretary General of the Democratic Union of Transport, revealed that cases have already been recorded of customers being robbed while using transportation applications, indicating that there are factors behind this.

Farabi explained that some applications “do not rely on supervisors who inspect the driver and documents to verify people who want to work in the field.”

The same union activist added, “The failure of some of these applications to take the step of appointing supervisors causes these companies to appoint cars and drivers, but when requesting the service, the customer meets another car and driver.”

The same spokesman pointed out that “the absence of a law regulating the sector leaves the door open to this chaos and the arrival of unprofessional drivers who exploit the opportunity and contribute to distorting the reputation of this type of transportation.”

The same union official added that actors in the sector are demanding the need to legalize it, especially since this field is one of the areas in which investment must be made, not to mention the need to accelerate this in light of the major demonstrations awaiting the country.

It is noteworthy that the security services in the Hassani neighborhood in Casablanca recently arrested people accused of using the transportation service via the electronic application to expose customers, especially women, to theft.

The security services in the Hassani neighborhood recorded many complaints from women in particular, accusing them of being robbed and assaulted after they resorted to requesting a transportation service through a popular electronic application.

The security personnel set up an elaborate ambush to arrest the driver of one of the cars who was deliberately luring his victims who were requesting this means of transportation, as a car with a registration number other than that listed on the application was used, while investigations continued with the aim of arresting the rest of those involved in committing these acts.
